Weight gain

I am 26 weeks and have gained 32 lbs. I feel like I could just eat aspargras and gain 2 lbs from the meal! My dr as well as myself are pretty concerned about this. Is anyone else in the same boat!?

Re: Weight gain

  • I have also put on about 30lbs at 26 weeks. With my first, I gained 55lbs total. My doc and I were both shocked. She had me journal everything I ate, and my activity. Her consensus was that "you just put on more weight than some when you are making a baby." Not comforting really, but none of the things they watch for health wise declined. Every woman is different. Do what you can, eat as healthy as you can and be active. If you still gain more than you intend, it is something you have to just accept is serving a purpose.

  • I am in the same boat. I get a lecture from my doctor every appointment and leave in tears every time. On top of it, I have gestational diabetes so I feel like she is thinking, well, see what you did. But here is the thing, I eat healthy, log my calories on my fit pal, work out 4x a week, take long walks the days I am not doing an official workout...but nothing helps. My diabetes nutritionist wants me to stay at 1800 calories but I feel like I should cut more. It makes me literally so depressed and I feel like it is ruining my pregnancy because I stress so much over my weight!
  • I'm in the same boat too! I'm
Up almost 30 at 27 weeks..I honestly don't know where it's going because my belly isn't that big. My doctors haven't said anything yet but I keep waiting for one of them to say something. I've struggled with my weight my whole life so this has really been hard for me..I hope it goes away quickly for all of us!
  • Every appt I have to hear about my weight. I too am up by 30-33 pounds and I'll be 27 weeks tomorrow. I feel like no matter what I eat it's an issue. I just try to stay positive through it all.
  • I am 27 weeks and have gained 30 also. At first I thought that I was eating too much but after really tracking everything I eat, without making any changes, that's really not the case. I just gain a lot of weight while pregnant. Its very frustrating when other people comment on how big I've gotten but I am just going to continue trying my best to stay healthy and not focus on the weight...and those other people can bite me.
  • I am up 35 pounds at 25 weeks. Thankfully, I'm not getting a lot of flack from my doctor about it this time around (baby #3) because she has my records and knows this is just how my body does pregnancy. With DD I started out at the exact weight I started out this pregnancy, and I gained 60 pounds. With DS I was 40 pounds lighter (actually was slightly underweight) and gained 80.

I am not overindulging and I work out 2-3x per week. So it's not like I'm using pregnancy as an excuse to "let go." I've actually TRIED to gain less. But my body just doesn't.

I've had two full-term, uncomplicated deliveries and my babies were both 8 pounds (so not extremely huge). I've never had gestational diabetes or any other complications during pregnancy, either.

It's discouraging on one hand because I struggle with body image issues big time. I just have to remind myself with the other two I lost all the weight within 8 months of delivery (well, with DS I didn't lose it ALL but got to a more healthy weight)...

  • The hardest thing for me is the body image. I have always had to work really hard to stay within a healthy bmi and sizes I feel good about. For me it's not the number on the scale that matters, but if I feel good about the woman looking back at me. Being a hairstylist, I am in front of a mirror all day long. I fully accept that how I look when pregnant isn't my "best" version of myself, but it is what my body does to bring my babies in the world. That makes me okay with it. Do I revel in the pregnancy fluff? Hell no. That part blows. Does it smart a little when people say stupid things about my physical appearance? Sure does. But I am healthy. I can work a 48 hour work week, standing for atleast 8 hours straight, flapping my arms around while entertaining people. Then at the end of this, I will bring my baby boy home. I will love on him and focus on losing the fluff.... After I nap of course.
  • I have been concerned, but at the opposite end of the spectrum. I am 27 weeks today and 5 lbs under where I started. I haven't had any morning sickness, just started eating super healthy. I am already heavy from my 2 previous pregnancies and this one I'm going backwards! My 2 other babies were girls and this one is a boy! I think my hormones are keeping me in check this time as my dr doesn't want me gaining any more than 15lbs! 13 weeks to go :)
  • Sounds like you are doing awesome. Keep up the good work. Even if you go a little above what doc wants, the difference between now and your previous pregnancies is amazing!
  • 26 weeks, up 25 pounds.. Had my first "OH WOW you're due in July?! Are you sure there aren't two in there"

Hm, I think this is normal - but I guess it depends on your hight and weight. E.g., I'm 5'4 and it was projected I would gain about 10lbs by week 20, and then about a lb a week until the baby is born. I'm almost 28 weeks and have gained 13lbs, and my OB is happy with this - though our end goal is 25lbs :)
  • I had the exact same thing said to me last week at work! "Are you sure you're due in July!?" And it was my bosses boss (female) who said it. I was completely pissed/bummed out the whole day and still am! People are so thoughtless. I just keep trying to enjoy being pregnant.
  • I'm 25 weeks and I've gained 13 pounds and my midwife suggests gaining no more than 25 to 30, I'm actually worried that when I see her this Wednesday she will tell me I'm gaining too quickly.

I am 29 weeks and have gained about 24 pounds. It's totally normal for my height and starting weight, but people don't believe I'm that far along :( apparently I look tiny. But pretty sure baby keeps measuring big, so whatever
  • Uh I've put on heaps- saw my dr today and she was like "oh well, you lost it all last time- let's not worry about it" she gets that I just get huge and after examining me agreed that a lot is fluid. (Maybe she's just lovely lol)

I'm almost 28 weeks and have gained about 35 pounds. Try not to worry about the weight. If it makes you feel any better, my midwife was talking about a patient of hers who gained very little with her first baby. The woman said it was her one regret. The reason being when she had the baby and was nursing she found that if she skipped a meal (as I'm sure many new moms in the midst of the chaos do) if would greatly effect her milk production. She didn't feel like she had any fluff to pull her through. I attribute my weight gain to....Ben & Jerry's....we have this discount grocery store and for months they have had 8-packs of frozen yogurt pints for $1.99!!! ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?! I did exhibit self control last time and managed not to buy eight more pints. Trying to ease myself off of them. Ha. I'm sure you are a beautiful pregnant goddess. Fluff and all.
  • I'm 5'3" and dr is concerned because in a 4 week period I gained 9 lbs! I decided on my own to write down what I'm eating to bring to him the next appt.. I told him before I got pregnant I wasn't eating breakfast and sometimes would skip lunch as well. And drank coffe all day which kept me full!! So I'm eating quite a bit more then I used too! Hopefully when I go in with my notes he will back off a little. My identical twin sister gained 50lbs with her pregnancy and lost it all (and then put it all back on, and then some) we are shorter and stalky (thanks, dad! Haha) but I am just going to continue doing what I'm doing, eat healthy and try to cut sugars as often as I can (my craving for peanut butter and chocolate is my downfall!) and eat dinner without breads, potatoes and such.. I don't want to worry too much about it because I want to breast feed and calories are needed to produce milk so its a tug of war but let's see what I weigh in at in 3 weeks..
Thanks for all the responses! I feel a lot better!
  • 25 weeks, up18lbs. Second pregnancy in short time (my LO is 14 months). I'm experiencing the same wt gain pattern as I did with him, fast to gain at the start then slows down (opposite of what you read is supposed to happen). I gained 32 lbs with him, lost it all within 2 months of delivery and started this pregnancy the same weight I was when I got pregnant with him. Doctors goal is 30-35 lb gain again this time, not worried....yet....unless it doesn't slow down!! All mommas need to remember that our bodies will do what it needs to do to grow a healthy baby. Relax, enjoy it...it only lasts 40 weeks!!!
  • Well geeze with GD I think she could let up a bit

Youre not doing it on purpose

  • I'm 26+1 and am still 10 lbs under my starting weight. I only lost around 15. People keep asking where he's hiding, I barely even have a bump. I'm pretty concerned myself and my nurse felt uneasy about it but the Dr didn't say anything was wrong, then again she didn't say anything good either. Dunno what to think at this point.

I am at 27 weeks and up 20 lbs. I gained 24 lbs. with my first, so who knows where I am tracking to end up at weight-wise with this one. My doc hasn't said anything one way or another. My issue is that i am shaped like a boy, straight up and down, no hips, with sticks for legs. All 20 lbs. are in my torso so I've been getting the "When are you due?!?!", and "are you having twins??" questions for weeks. I want to punch people...
  • I've only gained 4 lbs but I am over weight and every time we go to the Dr she is growing properly so we're not concerned at this point.
  • Also I'm due July 24th so I'm 25.5 days
  • I am 28 weeks yesterday and was up 22 lbs. I was a little concerned because I gained 11lbs in 3weeks! But the dr was not concerned at all and said I am in a good spot. So trying not to worry about the weight gain as long as baby is healthy
  • Second baby and almost 26 weeks and have gained 23. I gained I think 25 total with my first. My last appt I had gained 10 pounds.

  • I'm 27 weeks and up 20lbs. My last dr app he griped on me for putting that much on, but I'm all belly. I don't understand his issue. It's obviously the baby growing, and I'm measuring a week ahead.
  • I'm 29 weeks and have gained 10 lbs. Each pregnancy is different! I don't think there is a golden rule to go by.
  • Because your having a boy
  • A lot of this weight gain is water weight. I drink over a gallon of water a day because I do not want swelling and water is excellent for you, but I also walk my dog 4 miles a day. I've only gained 5 pounds and I'm 29 weeks. Just drink water girls, I swear! I honestly can't tell you why I have only gained 5 but, I do know I am healthy and don't swell at all. Other than that, try not to feel bad. The average woman gains 25-30 lbs during pregnancy.
  • I'm 26 weeks and gained 23 pounds! I'm freaking out. :/
  • I drink a gallon of water if not more a day.. I have major swelling!! I am getting monthy massages because of my sciatic pain I am
Having as well and the therapist can't believe how tight my legs are from the swelling. I'm
Really hoping a lot of this weight gain is water weight!!
  • I started at 117.8 and am 5 ft 5 in and weighed 138 today. Literally no clue where it has gone. My ob has never said anything about my weight and everyone else says I'm still "so tiny" wish I felt tiny. This picture sums up how I feel
  • I'm 27 weeks and my fundal height is measuring 2 weeks ahead consistently for the last 6 weeks or so. So 29 week fundal height currently. I'm 5'3 and weighed 123 pre pregnancy I currently weigh 140. So I've gained 17 pounds total. Today in response to the fundal height measurements my midwife told me to "slow my weight gain down" because we "want to make sure you don't have a big baby." It's driving me crazy, so many people have gained 20 to 30 pounds by this point, my friend gained 50 total and had a 7 pound baby. Not to mention I've read countless accounts of doctors inducing early bc baby is measuring big on ultrasound and then the baby is born at 5 or 6 pounds and the ultrasound and measurements were off by 2 pounds or more. It seems like a lot of non sense to me but even so dealing with my midwifes expectations is really stressing me out and making me worry.
