Staying hydrated water tastes gross

Hi all. I'm a little over 12 weeks and still nauseous 24/7. From reading other posts some of my symptoms might be related to dehydration. The problem is my mouth tastes like pennies and this makes water taste gross. I've mostly been drinking Gatorade, lemonade (helps me with my nausea), and chewing a lot of gum. I really want to drink water but it tastes so gross. Any ideas on either getting rid of the penny taste or staying hydrated?

Re: Staying hydrated water tastes gross

  • I have the same issue. My doctor told me to drink apple juice, but since its too sweet I just dilute it a little with water. As long as you keep drinking something...
  • Loading the player...
  • I slice up limes, or oranges and LOTS of ice, and put them in a big jug with water. Gives the water a fruity taste without all the sugars juice has.
  • Squeeze lemons into your water. Tastes great, quenches your thirst and it's good for you.
  • I have been drinking a lot of flavoured sparkling water.
  • Water tasted nasty to me too. My doctor told me to mix water with fruits. I did with watermelon, cucumbers, and mints. It gave that watermelon taste and I was able to drink it.

I like water mix-ins that don't contain aspartame. I've tried Dasani and Miyo, unfortunately Crystal Light has aspartame, which you shouldn't consume during pregnancy.
  • I use Crystal Light Lemonade. I'll mix one packet with a liter of water.

As long as you don't have PKU, aspartame is ok in moderation according to the American pregnancy association.
  • I like to squeeze a little lime juice into my water, as well as drinking flavored sparkling water. I try to avoid Gatorade because of the sugar, and regular juice is too sweet for me now.
Fruit-infused water is also good, though I haven't made any at home yet.

You can also help yourself stay hydrated by eating foods with high water content like watermelon or cucumbers.

  • With my last pregnancy and this one I like to add coconut water to my juice and I add a lot of ice or a little water to dilute. Coconut water is supposed to help with hydration, too.
  • Thanks everyone for the great ideas. I'm a FTM and it took about 9 months on our IVF journey to get here so I'm extra paranoid about what I consume. I was trying to limit my sugar from Gatorade and avoid aspertame in flavorings but in doing that I just dehydrated myself which I know is not good. Going to the grocery store today to stock up the fruits/drinks everyone suggested.
  • Water is really important and there is not a replacement for it. Try slicing up strawberries or lemons or lines or oranges and put it in there don't replace it with something with sugar or
    Fake sugar.
  • I get tired of water after awhile!  I use the Minute Maid water drops to put in my water for flavoring and I LOVE grape juice so I always pour half to 3/4 of my glass with water and the rest with juice.  Helps cut the calories down that way as well and get more water.

I use the same type of water bottle everyday so I know exactly how much water I have drank throughout the day. I try to add fruit and lots ice to make it taste a little better. I have also been drinking flavored sparkling water to switch it up - just make sure it is unsweetened. Also - in the morning, I add coconut water to my first cup. It may be all in my head, but I swear it helps with energy!

  • I like flavored sparkling waters that don't have ingredients like aspertame. I'm also okay with drinking Gatorade, my body needs the fluids and I rather be drinking that than nothing at all! My doctor just wants me to keep getting fluids even if I can't drink plain water cause it makes me so nauseous. Hang in there! I'm also finding that the colder the water is the easier it is to drink it!
  • I mix ginger ale with water and put frozen berries on top. The fizziness and sweetness of the ginger ale settles my stomach and the berries add flavor.
  • water is disgusting!  :-& I've been living off light lemonade and ice water with limes.  I cannot drink straight water for the life of me.  grape/cranberry juice watered down as well.
  • I am having the same exact issue at almost 14 weeks! I've started throwing up and getting heartburn I feel once I drink water it messes up my stomach and the nausea begins...it's not that water tastes gross to me, I feel like everything in my stomach swirls once I begin drinking water and it makes me want to throw everything I had earlier :(( i stopped drinking my water with cut up lemons...I'll try that again with a lot of ice.

  • I gag on plain water too. I've been going through flavored sparkling water like crazy though. (La Croix). Gives me the fizz of soda, which I cut out, and a flavor. Oh, and cranberry juice - it's not too sweet.

  • I also put lots of fruit in my water to make it taste better. Right now my favorite is rasberries.
I haven't seen anyone mention Vitamin Water. That's also been a go to. I like the lemon aide zero one. They don't use aspertame. And the electrolytes really helped with the nausea and the headaches!
  • I love lemon in my water. For on the go, I got powder called True Lemon that is sweetened with a touch of sugar and stevia (no artificial sugars). The thought of other people touching my lemons makes me want to gag, so I bring the powder along. Only use a little bit at a time so one packet lasts a whole day or more :)
  • I use soda water with a little 100% cranberry.
  • Flavored seltzer water. It is pretty much all I drink anymore (with the exception of my morning coffe). The bubble calm any upset tummy and it is calorie and sugar free.
  • I've been putting lemon in my water (lots of it!) and drinking vitamin water (it does have sugar but no artificial food color). I know I haven't had enough to drink if I start to get a headache.

Also try La Croix- it's naturally flavored sparkling water and it's pretty darn good. I like to use it to mix for a "mock tail" or just add friut to make it a spritzer. You feel more fancy drinking it than you would just water haha!
  • I'm so jealous of those of you who can drink la croix and sparkling water!!!!! I stocked up on la croix in all of these wonderful flavors, but every single time I drink anything with bubbles I get sick.
  • My dr said not to worry about actual water when I wasn't feeling well but to just keep drinking so I wouldn't get dehydrated, basically whatever I could keep down! I was drinking g2 Gatorade and sprite with water whenever I was feeling better. Now that I feel better I drink mostly water but Gatorade after I work out
  • I am doing powerade or gatorade cut with water. I try and do half and half. That way I still get the flavor of the powerade but it isn't SOO sweet. My doctors said this was a good call while water is still gross...
  • My MW told me that drinking cold water helps a bit. You could also do fruit infused water. Do berries or lemon or cucumber (that's really yummy!). I mix Apple juice 50/50 with water. So that I'm getting more water and not as much sugar. Good luck

  • I have a very difficult time with plain water too. I even try the fruit infused and still struggle with it most times. What I have the greatest success with is the Glaceau Vitamin Waters. They have no bad ingredients in them and are infused with vitamins. They are a staple for me.
