Anyone's DH or SO obsessed with ONE NAME?

DH wants to name our son Ira Joseph. Spanish is my second language and -a words and names are always feminine so I am having a hard time accepting Ira. It's a biblical name which I like, and a family name, but do you like it for a boy? Part of me loves it but I just don't want people think my son is a girl.

Re: Anyone's DH or SO obsessed with ONE NAME?

  • It's interesting but I agree sounds very feminine .. My DH only liked Adele and I don't really like old sounding names so it has been hard to find a name we both like when he has already found his pick

  • I'm in the same boat! DH wants to name our girl Elizabeth and he's kinda obsessed with it. I like other names and am not sold on Elizabeth. The debate continues!! ;)
  • I'm obsessed with the name Daniel but apparently it's too plain and traditional :(
  • I don't think Ira is horribly feminine. And when he gets older he can aways go with Joe for his middle name. My first was a girl and I really wanted a boy/girl name for her so we went with Sam. Since our second is a boy I'm letting my husband pick the name... of course I have to approve. So we went with Ezekiel and we will call him Zeke for a nickname. It took some time to grow on me but its a name that's not overly populated and it's still not a crazy name that's really not a name.
  • Btw I really wanted to name my second girl Elizabeth and call her lizzy if we were having another girl. And Daniel is a beautiful name! Danny is a fun nickname. I'm all about nicknames.
  • When we were first picking names (and for months and months on) my partner was obsessed with naming our son...wait for it...Lazer Wolf. In ernest too! His feelings would get hurt if I laughed every time he brought it up. And it was hard not to giggle, believe me.

Ira is a very intelligent sounding name, if you ask me. Very fluid to say aloud.
  • I've known a few Iras and they were all men. I could never name my child ira though because both of the ones I currently know are incompetent idiots. Funny how people can ruin a name for you.
  • My SO is obsessed with the middle name Marie. Like okay, it's pretty... But half of the human race has that middle name. No matter how hard I try to sway him otherwise, he will not budge from Marie. And says if her middle name can't be Marie, then her first name cant be Sadie. Ugh... Men.
  • My hubby and I had the same problem for months, but since he did not like Noha and I did not like charlie. I started looking into our doughters name wich is Alison, so I looked into boy names that end with son and found Jason. Thank god we both liked the name cuz I was going crazy.
  • I like Ira, to me is sounds manly.

I'm the one that's obsessed with one name ha ha and I'm driving my hubby crazy! I like the name Jude for our little boy. It's not like I'm not open to other names I just really like Jude. Plus I like to give my husband a hard time ;)
  • Ira is a really cool name, but if you hate it then its not right. Although once the baby arrives you may totally think he looks like an Ira. Lol My hubby and I have had Mason picked out since before we were pregnant, but arr still debating on the girl name. (We're team green!)

  • We're in the same boat, my hubby (and our three sons!) want to call this baby girl Summer, ok I like it but I don't love it. The boys have told all of our familys she'll be called Summer and they all love it too.
I guess it's just me that's not keen.
Every suggestion I come up with is dismissed
  • On your hubby's name choice I feel Ira is a little feminine.
  • I really like Ira!! I don't know anyone named Ira. My husband said we were naming our baby Aubriella the second we found out we were pregnant. He was so sure it would be a girl. :x
  • My dh is obsessed with isaac and am not in love with this name and he keeps refusing all my suggestions so we will go with isaac although i found it heavy
  • I think Ira sounds like the name of a scholar!! I don't think feminine at all.
  • @klaG101 Jude was my pick for a boy name. Love it :)

I love the name Ira. I find it masculine.
  • I am in the same boat. The name he wants is not the name I want and he won't change his mind on it.

Every Isaac I know is incredibly handsome and likeable :) I think it has good vibes. Plus it means laughter!

I think it's so beautiful all your "boys" are already being so possessive of her! And Summer is such a happy and sweet name. I hope you can reconcile with it bc it sounds like you're outnumbered, mama!
  • IRA (1)
    GENDER: Masculine
    USAGE: BiblicalEnglishHebrew
    OTHER SCRIPTS: עִירָא (Hebrew)
    PRONOUNCED: IE-rə (English)   [key]
    Meaning & History
Means "watchful" in Hebrew. In the Old Testament this is the name of King David's priest.
As an English Christian given name, Ira began to be used after the Protestant Reformation.
In the 17th century the Puritans brought it to America, where remained moderately common into the 20th century.

You also have Ira Gershwin who did pretty well for himself.  Won some Academy Awards, won some Tonys. Wrote
"Someone to Watch Over Me", along with several other songs and Broadway Musicals.
  • I like Ira!

We had the opposite problem. I would love names and DH would shoot them all down.

Thank goodness we're having a girl because the only boy name that he liked was Gunner and I suggested it as a joke. lol

I don't think Ira sounds feminine at all. It does make me think of an old timey farmer though for some reason.
  • Thank you for all the responses! I am happy that many of you like the name since I don't have the heart to crush DH's dreams. :)
  • ^ that's me. My computer signs me in under a different name than my mobile app.
  • Me & my DH are torn between 2 names. I love the name Silas, I had it picked before justin Timberlake, & DH loves Emmett. We've decided to just choose one when he is born!

I love that! You'll know when you see him!
  • Thanks for the support
  • My DH was pretty obsessed with the name Ira too!! I wasn't in love with it, but I never straight up shut the possibility down. I told him that if he could provide a middle name that worked well with it, then I would consider it. I also didn't love the name Ira with our last name, which unfortunately, was an issue I had with most names.
He eventually got over Ira, and moved onto Oscar. Again, I wasn't in love with the name. And I had been pretty partial to Clark, which he wasn't much into. But once we tried the two names together, Oscar Clark, we loved it.
