Creating a monster?

Our 4mo boy will usually only go to sleep when being held. during the day we try to lay him down once asleep he wakes right up, never fails. But at night we can put him down and he's good for 8-9hours it's just day time naps that he'll wake right up unless he's on us. We've tried swaddling and not during the day - he'll only sleep at night swaddled once uve rocked him to sleep. Thoughts?!

Re: Creating a monster?

  • that is exactly what we are going through. minus the sleeping well at night. I have to hold/Rock him every nap. at night I rock him to sleep swaddled & put him in his crib. he still wakes every 2-3 hour, but he lets me put him down.. during the day it's not an option. if we don't rock in my arms, he won't sleep. the second he gets put down he wakes.

  • During day naps, when I can keep an eye on him, I put my Lo on his side. If he's on his back he startles himself and wakes up. I still have to rock him to sleep first but at least he stays down for an hour or two. It gives him the illusion that he is being held. Side sleeping is the only way he naps.. Hope this helps
  • Ive got a monster even at night if i put her down & she isnt soundo she wakes up & i end up sitting wi her as her holding my hand settles her til she is bk to sleep xx
  • Same exact thing going on. Used to nap easily. This week everything's changed. Slept through the night fornthr last 5 weeks 8-4/5 am. Now it's been up 3-5 but rocks right back to sleep. Easy for me to do but he starts daycare next
  • If it's bothering you to hold him, buy a sling so at least your hands are free. Be thankful he's sleeping during the night. Holding babies seems like it goes with the territory, no? 4 months is still so young.

  • No It's not bothering me I just don't know what the norm is as he's my first and I have relatives who have older children who will not go to sleep unless being held and I just don't want that in the future. Thx to the other ladies, glad to hear it's the norm - I obviously love any cuddle time I can get the house just stays a mess!
  • My LO is now 4 months old. Starting week 6 or 8 she won't sleep on her own at all. During the day time I have to babywear her so she will nap otherwise she'll stay awake and will be fussy. For bedtime, I have to hold her to sleep. Once she's sleeping, she will wake up once during the night for a diaper change and will take a pacifier and sleep until about 7:30am for her first feeding in the morning. I can't put her down by herself at all because she will wake up. I don't know what to do or how long this will last. I'm hoping it will pass soon.
  • I had this problem but not anymore. What I did was let my little one sleep on my chest at night for a few weeks after rocking her to sleep(put pillows either side of you just in case) then I transitioned from on my chest into bed with me for another few weeks. I still rocked her to sleep but put her down once asleep. My little one will only sleep on her tummy now but my doctor said its fine because she was a big healthy baby with no complications. After she was used to sleeping alone but with me beside her I started to put her into her cot but keeping it close to me at night so If she woke I was still beside her. She now sleeps in a travel cot during the day and in my room at night in her cot. The last few weeks I've been able to put her to bed without rocking at all. It took a few weeks to sort out but we are proof it can be done! My lo is 4 months old now and naps for 30-40 mins 4 times a day and sleeps 11-12 hours a night in her own cot :)
  • My LO is a terrible napper at home. He takes 1-2 hour long naps at daycare, and even sleeps in his crib there, but at home, he will not nap unless in our arms or if we're laying with him. Even then, he usually wakes up after 20 minutes. He does sleep great at night (usually) so I can't really complain, I just don't get why he sleeps so well at daycare, but not at home.

  • I read they can start to dislike the swaddling after 3 months and it's also good to stop then (based on article) so they can get more muscle movement at night to build up for crawling. Maybe try not swaddling?
  • My mom bought this for me oversea, and it work sometimes.

I found that if I use this everyday, my baby is the same ... 20-30 minutes naps. But if I use it every other day, it work.... Go figure... We all just trying our best to get to know our baby. By the way, I have all different kinds of swing too from USA.... U name it..... I tried it. I guess this THING feels like he is swaddled. I consider myself lucky! At least I have every other day to get things done.
  • I let my little one nap in her swing. She loves the rocking motion. She sleeps on her back at night but for naps she likes the swing or mamaroo
