Baby measuring big...

At our 32 week doctors appt yesterday my belly measurement was 3cm too big. Dr. has ordered an ultrasound to check on baby. Wondering if i should be worried. At our 20 week ultrasound baby showed a bigger belly. Has this happened to anyone else?

Re: Baby measuring big...

  • At my 26 week appt I had a surprise ultrasound because my belly was 3.5cm big. It wound up being nothing...the baby was sitting balled up and breech which caused my belly to poke pit more than normal. They measured her to be right on time developmentally and actually small for her age (dh and I are not big people and we were both small babies so that's what we expected).

Good luck! Look at it as an extra opportunity to see the baby. That's what we did.

  • Don't worry at all. At 26 weeks I was told I was measuring 29 cm. Then at 28 weeks I was told I was measuring bang on at 28 cms! They basically were saying I had shrunk a cm in two weeks which was just not true.

I queried this with my consultant who totally poo-poohed the whole measuring thing - it's so subjective and midwives all measure differently. In the UK measuring over 3 cm is fine - no one bats an eyelid. My consultant says that they basically look for measurements that are way out of whack and they're more concerned if the measurement comes up small.

If you want more info and reassurance, there were a few threads on this a while back which will probably also allay your concerns.

Relax - I seriously wouldn't think any more about it!
  • I am measuring a week ahead. I think it is pretty common. Did you express your concerns with the doctor?

I actually measured 26 yesterday At 29 weeks then after an impromptu ultrasound they found that everything's fine baby's just good at squeezing in there or something
I wouldn't be too worried about it. Talk with doctor and see more of what they say
  • The fundal measurements basically mean nothing. They can't be used to diagnose anything. They are just used as a simple barometer indicating the need to further investigate if something wierd comes up.
