Brown pinkish discharge

Hi I had my internal ultrasound about 5 days ago and for 4 days I have been spotting. My spotting has been cervical mucus with a brownish pinkish discharge (only when I wipe after I pee). I went to my doctor today and he said if I'm cramping or it gets heavier to go to the ER. My blood pressure and temperature were fine. I don't know if I should go to the hospital to get checked out. Have you had any similar experiences? I'm not cramping and I haven't been spotting on my pad only when I wipe. I feel very wet though. Thoughts? This is my first pregnancy and I'm not sure what is normal and what is not :)

Re: Brown pinkish discharge

  • I'm 7 weeks 2 days but it's an estimate :)

  • I had the same after an internal ultrasound, it irritated my cervix. If everything looked okay on your scan, try to keep calm! It's hard to say what's normal as it's completely dependent on the individual. If you're very worried speak to your doc again x

I had some spotting during my first pregnancy that was like that, I know it's hard but try to focus on the doctors comments. You have an event that's a likely cause, you're not cramping, and it's not getting heavier. I would call your doctor again if you're still worried, but the ER is probably not needed yet. Good luck!
  • Thank you ladies. I've had two ultrasounds so far because of spotting 2 weeks ago (after intimacy). The first time they did a ultrasound it only showed an empty sac but then five days later they did an internal ultrasound and it showed a yolk sac. I'm hoping for the best
  • Do you have another scan booked in? I found out I have a cervical ectropion which is harmless but a pain as my cervix is super sensitive right now, on a sex ban! That can be checked via an internal exam, but could make you spot some more (it did for me!) lots of people spot & it's normal for them.. Try to keep away from online research as that won't help!

Something my husband told me which really helped (we had a mc in oct so seeing spotting really upset me), is to try and stay positive until proven otherwise!!! So until there's any bad news, try and assume the best and keep calm x
  • Maybe it's an SCH? I spotted with my son and that's all it was. He's completely healthy and so was the pregnancy.
  • Thank you Mamavbs. I was told to come back Thursday so maybe he will book me in for another ultrasound. I'll get a second opinion in the morning and let you know how it goes :)
  • Do not go to the ER just for brown/pinkish discharged, there is nothing that they can do either way. If your doctor said everything looks okay and not to worry then I would do just that. During pregnancy you do have an increased amount of discharge and it just gets worse the further along you get, at least for me it always did. I haven't ever had pink/brown discharge, but tons of other women have and it is completely normal.

  • They would have seen SCH on the ultrasound. My bet would be the internal aggregated your cervix. No cramping, not getting heavier......don't get too worked up at this point. If all looked good at office visit, the keep that in your mind. DO NOT.....I REPEAT DO NOT, research online. It only adds to stress and worry. Which isn't good for you or baby.
  • I had a little bit of brown stringy discharge the other day. Very similar to yours, it was only when I wiped after using the restroom. I called my doctor yesterday morning and they said it was fine and nothing to worry about. I keep telling myself "if they aren't worried, I shouldn't be either." They're professionals and see this day in and day out. That helped me stay calm hopefully it helps you!!
  • I've been having blood along with brown discharge (old blood mixed with other fluids) through out my whole first trimester - it's stressful and discouraging BUT every doctor visit I've had has been normal with normal growth and normal heartbeat. Don't worry as long as the doctor doesn't see any internal blood and the baby is progressing normally- rule of thumb is if it increases to an actual menstrual flow (think like the heaviest period you've ever had) and back and pelvic cramp then it's time to go back to the doctor or ER. This is my first baby too but since my bleeding I've been seeing the dr every week since six weeks and each time he's told me exactly that. I know it's stressful as I'm going through it as well BUT try to keep a positive mind and like I said if it's not continuous blood flow you'll be ok! Good luck! Hope this helps!!
  • Sorry I'm ten weeks now! Just FYI so it's been like this for almost two months now...
  • 10 weeks tomorrow, I've been having brownish pink discharge (little spots on liner and when I wipe) with mild cramping. Doctor sent me straight to ER so here I sit. If it's stressing you out it never hurts to get checked, that being said I'm not sure where you live. For me in Canada it can ne easier to just go to the ER... Hope everything is well with you and your little one!

  • I am 8 weeks today and had this starting Saturday with mild cramping here and there, I have a us tomorrow l. Good luck to all it is stress full and scary but they say it's normal so positive vibes for all x
  • I'm not sure who declared brown and pink spotting normal. Based on what I've read and now through my own experience it may not be normal. If you are worried go to see your doctor or to the ER. Just spent 4 hours in emerg to see a sac and no baby at 10 weeks, my spotting was due to early onset of miscarriage. Sorry don't want to freak you out but if your spotting and it's not going away then it might be worth getting looked at.

  • I had a SCH with my last pregnancy that neither the OB doctor or Ultrasound Tech (20 years experience) detected. It was ONLY diagnosed when I called my OB doc on call and he told me to go the ER. After some blood work, routine tests and an US they diagnosed it as a small SCH. Unfortunately, ours resulted in a miscarriage but, I do not feel that was the cause I believe it had to do with genetic chromosome abnormalities. Experiencing any sort of pink, red, brown, blue, green etc. (joking about a couple of the colors) ;) is always alarming. I will pray everything works out wonderful for you and your baby. X
  • Hi all, thanks for your responses! :) I haven't had any spotting today I booked in to see the doctor tomorrow who will give me a referral for a ultrasound (gotta get booked in for that too). I'm prepared for the worst but hoping for the best. Whatever happens it is in Gods hands :) roxyboard sorry to hear that, I'm thinking of you. I really appreciate all of your comments and have read every single one taking strength and positive energy! I will update when I found out thank you all xoxo
  • My doctor, my midwife the and e nurse all said it was normal!!!! Had my scan baby is fine happy and heart beating, I have an irritable cervix, I had cells removed 3 years ago so they think it will just be one of those things for me!!! Good luck all
  • Update:

Hi ladies, I went to my doctor today and he just said to go for an ultrasound in 2 more weeks. I don't know know if I should get a second opinion? I spotted for 4-5 days and I don't know if he is taking it seriously.

It's been a week since my last ultrasound and waiting 2 more weeks seems a bit long?
  • I'm 7 weeks but I'm about technically 6 weeks he said there's no point going early because they won't be able to see anything for 2 more weeks
  • @Chris189 I spotted for 7 days due to cervical irritation. If it's not getting worse, that is a good sign. Spotting is such a weird topic as it can be normal for some people & for others it isn't. I know it completely consumed me, I couldn't think of anything else or relax. I'm still very nervous about it & im 10 weeks now. I saw my lovely baby at 9 all happy but I'm still paranoid and obsessed with discharge colour!! If you need the reassurance like I did, keep pushing your doctor. Be honest and say it's driving you nuts! At 6 weeks they should see a sac and possibly a tiny fetal pole (it looks like a diddy line!) if you can hold out another week- you'll have a better chance of seeing baby but as I said- I totally understand how you feel & im praying it's just a normal thing for you and bubs is fine in there x
  • Thank you @mamavbs :) I had a letter sent in the mail from the medical centre to pick up my blood test results from two weeks ago, I asked him for it today and he said not to worry about it. I am definitely am going to get another doctor. I will definitely keep you posted how this all goes!
