Bassinet vs Co-sleeper vs Pack N Play?

Does anyone have suggestions on what works best for the first few months? I definitely want baby to be close to me. I'm trying to decide between a bassinet, arms reach co sleeper, or pack n play with the bassinet attachment. What has worked best for y'all? Why didn't you like a certain one? Thanks so much!!

Re: Bassinet vs Co-sleeper vs Pack N Play?

  • I had the co sleeper with my first & liked it ok. We used the rock n play with my second, and I loved it. He definitely stayed asleep longer stretches.
  • Loading the player...
  • I've heard people prefer the rock and play as a bassinet. Its affordable, slightly angled for reduction of reflux, bed height, and you can reach out and rock it back and forth if they start to cry. FTM and that is how I am planning on doing it. Friend is giving us a bassinet but I don't think Ill use it
  • That seems to be the best option for the money! Thanks y'all!!

We had a bassinet, pack n play, and a rock n play. We got WAY more use out of the rock n play than the other two. The incline helped both my babies sleep better/longer.
  • I had the graco travel lite pnp with stages for #1. It is narrower than a pnp, so fit next to our bed (even fit in the camper trailer) and was lighter to tote along for travelling. The 2 stage bassinet lasted until she started crawling, and she didn't outgrow the play pen in length until she was over a year old (and sleeping in a toddler bed).

We have limited space and didn't want multiple baby gadgets, so I liked how multifunctional it was. Plus, we wanted LO in our room until 6 months old, and no traditional bassinet we saw would last that long (plus they're a pain to store in between kids bc they're huge-our pnp from #1 is in a tidy little carrying case in her closet).

  • The rock and play was hands down the best gift we received for my son. It kept him cozy and propped up a little and I swear it's the reason he started sleeping through the night at 3 weeks old. We used it for the first 3 months. It's lightweight so I would bring it downstairs for naps too.
  • With my first 2 we did a bassinet with a pack n'play and diaper changing area.  LOVED it.  Will use it again this time around.  It was handy beside the bed and the girls did great in it.

With dd 2 we also used a rock n'play - but that was in place of the bouncer - we liked that she was off the ground with a 2 year old around :)

  • @joco We got one with a changer this time around too! I'm excited about it!
  • We used the rocker. It worked so well because it was easy to put away and pull out at night. Plus you can put it next to the bed and rock without getting up. I did everything on the floor changing diapers and clothes wise so I never had a reason to get the whole pack n play till later on
  • We loved the bassinet for our son because it's higher up and we didn't need to worry about the dog sticking his nose in the baby's face and waking him up.
  • Either one will do the job. Pack and play is bigger so it depends how much room u have in ur room. I'm going to use the rock n play sleeper. It's a good height, it has a great position for baby to sleep, some babies sleep better in it bc of position and it's good just to have baby sit in it and play. Easy to move from room to room, small and lightweight.
  • One last thing u will get money worth bc u will use rock in play more often and for a while, bassinets u only use for short time. It saves money in my oppinion..

I bought a PnP with DD1, I had it at bedside and she went crazy, would not lay down! My cousin bought me a RnP, it was a godsend.
I've used the same RnP with DD2 and will use it this time. It folds down relatively flat and I could carry anywhere that we went if needed. But the PnP also folds up pretty good.
The same cousin also gifted me a Baby Bjorn PnP and that's what DD1 uses in our room when she sleeps in there now that's she's older.
  • We used a PnP with bassinet feature for DS1. I plan to use it again with this one. I had it set up on my side of the bed so I could easily get up with him.
  • I have an Arms Reach CoSleeper that we use. With DS I used a pack & play & wasn't a fan just because it was so big. Luckily I had the space for it. I like the ARCS because it's bed level & small enough not to be over whelming.

  • We love our pnp with the bassinet!  We used it all over the house when our DS was a baby he's almost three now and we still use it all the time (with out the bassinet hahaha) for naps, and bedtimes at relatives and friends place's!  We take it everywhere!
  • I have a (maybe dumb) question. We received a Chicco pack n play from a boy who is now 6. So it's a few years old.

Does this matter? Is there any crazy ridiculous safety feature that didn't exist 6 years ago that I must know about?

If not, we totally want to use this for as long as we can.
  • @barrelocarol I'd google for any chicco recalls to be sure, but if there aren't any, you're probably all set!
  • @Mousemama Great answer! Will do!

I have been reading that older cribs are a bad idea bc of design flaws but didn't know if this translated to a pack n play.

And maybe 6 years just isn't that old...?
  • @barrelocarol I agree, 6 years isn't that old. And even with cribs, as long as it's not one with a design flaw, it would probably be okay. I know we're getting a hand me down crib from friends for this little one and as long as there's nothing inherently dangerous about it, I'm saying hooray for a free crib!
  • This is my 3rd. We have a bassinet, pack n play and a rock n play. We have used all 3 with my other two. I'd suggest the pack n play and/or rock n play. They are both great for travel and serve an additional purpose. I used to use the rock n play in the bathroom while I showered. The pack n play was great to keep older babies contained.

  • Thanks so much everyone! I think we are going to get both the pack n play and the rock n play. I'm sure we will get use out of both over time!
