quick question that popped in my mind

ok im thinking of stuff I need for baby and this question popped in my head. im wondering how many bottles I would need to buy and what is best brand to use ive looked at walmart n on Amazon at different brands but I wanted opinions especially from second time moms.

Re: quick question that popped in my mind

  • We used Avent bottles for my first two so we will be starting with those for this one. The thing with bottles is you don't know until you try them. You may want to get two or three different types to try incase one doesn't work for your baby. It's hard to say how many you'll need, depends on if you are exclusivey bottle feeding or supplementing with formula and how often you plan on washing the bottles.

  • Like PP stated it depends on if your BF'ing or FF'ing. We FF DS and the best bottles we found were Dr. brown. Seriously the best hands down (for us)! No gas issues or tummy troubles because of air.

  • okay thanks n I might try bf then transition not sure yet thanks for the input
  • I would definitely suggest getting a few of several different brands because you can't known which ones baby will take when the time comes.
  • I want to add to the question if you don't mind? I don't understand the differences between bottles and why baby would prefer one over the other. I plan on Bfing, but I still need bottles to pump into, no? And I assume it's the nipple that baby may not like, not the actual bottle? If so, can you buy different nipples for the bottles?

You can pump directly into some brands of bottles, but not all will fit interchangeably. For example, a Dr. Brown bottle will screw into a Medela flange, but an Advent or Playtex bottle won't. I can't speak to ever noticing any difference in baby in terms of gas from one bottle to the next, but I'm sure some have. We ended up trying Playtex Ventaire, Dr. Brown's and Avent bottles. I spent so much money on buying different nipples (shapes and flows) to try to get her to eat better, not spill, not turn her head for breath, etc. I ended up donating all of the Playtex bottles and Dr. Brown's because there are just too many pieces for my liking. The Playtex leaked too easily and putting together a Dr. Brown's bottle one handed was more complicated than I felt it had to be. That said, Avent is what ended up working for us and I like just having one brand with parts/nipples that interchange. You will end up finding your own favorite for a combination of reasons that work for you and your baby. I definitely recommend starting with one of a few different brands and see what you guys like.

  • When DD first starting taking bottles, around 3 months, prior to my going back to work, she used Dr. Brown's.  A few months later, she started refusing them but would take Tommee  Tippee.  That's what we used until DD stopped taking a bottle at daycare at around 1 year.

FWIW, I would not buy or register for a ton of bottles.  Not all kids take to the bottles you pick out.  You may need to try some out.  If you want to register, I would get a small selection of 2 or 3 brands so there are options.

I plan to exclusively breast feed but will also pump, especially if I go back to work. I did a lot of research on the best bottles for breast fed babies. The Avent bottles are super popular and almost everyone I know with babies uses them.

However, I registered for the Comotomo silicone bottles. They're made from medical grade silicone so the actual bottle is sort of squishy and they have a nice large, round nipple. You can find them at Target or Amazon.

  • We just used the bottles that came from Medela, same brand as the pump I used. You can buy a couple different nipples from them that work on all their bottles. The Calma nipple was really good at improving my LO's latch/suck as we struggled to breastfeed the first 6-8 weeks and I was mostly EPing until we got the hang of it.

As PP said, I wouldn't go crazy on any single type of bottle just yet, until you know what works for your LO and if you are dealing with any special needs like reflux.
  • I will be breastfeeding until she goes to daycare. I have registered for a few of several different bottles. That way I can take back what she won't use. I have about 20 dr. Brown's that someone gave me. I have an Avent. I also registered for Tommie and latch by munchkin.

  • Used Dr. Brown's and hated the clean up and then switched to tommee tippy which I loved. I used those all the way through snippy cup years because you can get sippy cup nipples that work with the bottles.
  • I nurse, but loved tommee tippee when I pumped.

  • Honestly, it depends on you and your baby. For my son I went out and got all those expensive bottles and stuff for emergencies but when it came time to use them my son hated them and actually preferred the cheap Walmart brand. I wouldn't get attached to one particular kind honestly.
