New allergic reactions

Did anyone inform you that during pregancy you could develop new allergic reactions. This is something no one told me yet to find out I am allergic to something big time. Husband wanted to ship me off to the hospital this morning but lucky me I have gotten off so far but probably not the next time Since it seems my reactions getting worse each time. I had a minor reaction a couple of days ago and developed a small patch of hives on my face that cleared within an hour after taking benadryl today however my face swelled and now I have hives all over my face and some on my ears. Anyone else have this happen to you and if so what did you find you are allergic to. Mine is either fruits, tea, or my prenatals all of which I have been fine on till a few days ago.

Re: New allergic reactions

  • I would call your Dr and get an Epi pen...subsequent reactions could be worse

  • I know I have heightened sensitivities to my allergens, what used to cause a small allergic response is now giving me a larger one, but I haven't had anything new as far as I know. But @laurendutch is right, swelling of the face and hives all over your face and ears is pretty severe, and if the next reaction is worse you could be in serious trouble. You should definitely discuss this with your Dr today or tomorrow at the latest, and eliminate all of your possible triggers until you and your Dr have put a plan into place in case you react severely again. Good luck! (P.s. - other than my allergy to penicillin family drugs, my allergens are all environmental - pollen, dander, dust)

  • Ask @knwilliams01 I believe she breaks out in hives and was just talking about it in a thread the other day. Doctors are good too.
  • @trytry38ever I have serious skin allergies and broke out frequently pre pregnancy. My allergies are definitely heightened with pregnancy - hives are worse and more common. I've found that ice packs and Benadryl are the best for heading off a reaction that is starting. Also, if you get hives on your face or neck - I would definitely be seen by your doctor or the ER. Don't want to take any risks with your airway!
  • Thanks for your comments I will probably be talking to a doctor about them tomorrow about them but since it's Sunday everything is pretty much closed. I took benadryl right away and an oatmeal bath. The reason I didn't go to the Dr right way is because it was not affecting my breathing but it could have been that I threw up so I got rid of whatever was causing it. The good thing is that I did not eat much so it won't be to hard to find out what is causing it. I just cannot believe that I never heard allergies going crazy like or even increase sensitivity towards allergens. you would think since it could be so sevear that they would warn you of what could happen and what to do if it does.
  • I developed food allergies after giving birth to DS. I developed a severe avocado allergy and mild banana and latex allergy.

I noticed every time I had avocado I would get violently ill. I went to an allergist and was tested for all sorts of food allergies.

I would definitely speak to your doctor especially if the allergy is getting worse. It could turn anaphylactic the next time.

  • Yup . mine is squash...
  • Lactose intolerance! No ice cream for me :(
  • Just FYI you may notice heightened allergies in the post partem period as well. I had an anaphylactic type reaction when DS was about a month old (And never previous to that with the same food I'd always eaten). Scary stuff! Get an epi pen now if you had face hives.

I was lactose intolerant before pregnancy, but now tolerate milk fine. I'm interested to see what happens post partem.
  • Had a minor nut allergy (I think) that has turned in to a full blown nut allergy. It sucks.

  • My mouth and tongue has gone numb a few times now. I can't pinpoint what it is that's causing it but my doc isn't concerned. She just said it could be a weird symptom
  • @amccoy129 same with me!! Just had some cheese and it was fabulous! (I have severe food intolerances but pregnancy has changed my immune system. Sure I will go back to my normal self after delivery. For now, im loving it!)

OP - did you make yourself throw up or was that part of the reaction? If it was involuntary, the hives and the vomiting together indicate anaphylaxis. Two systems reacting is a severe allergic reaction. Please contact your doctor. My daughter has food allergies and this is a big thing I watch for.
