June 2015 Moms

vacation plans ?

We have a vacation planned for the week after my kids get out of school. I will be 36 weeks by then and I'm so nervous about being 4 hours from home! I plan on talking to my dr tomorrow at my appointment, but was wondering if anyone else has plans for a vacation this late in their pregnancy or if they have taken one before? Just looking for comments or advice :)

Re: vacation plans ?

  • Nothing planned here. My doctor put me on travel restriction at 28 (it's normally 32w). I have plans for after the baby arrives though!

  • Not really a vacation, but in 2 weeks I'm going back to my hometown for the baby shower that my mom's throwing. I'll be 34.5 weeks and it's about 4 hours away. In my circumstances I'm not worried, this has been an extremely smooth pregnancy and if I were to go into early labor away from my doctors, there's no better place for it to happen - my family will be there and the hospitals in their town are ones I've been familiar with since I was a little kid.

If you have concerns, definitely ask your doctor for advice! I know you said you were planning to anyway - I think this is a good decision :)

  • Is it 4 hours away driving or flying? What's the destination? For me, I'm staying closer to home, but depending on the answers, what your doc says, and if you feel comfortable, I guess go and try to have fun!
  • DH and in would like to drive down to Milwaukee (3 & 1/2 - 4 hours) to see a Brewers game before summer (and my pregnancy) comes into its fullest, and I'm a smidge worried about being that far away, but I really want to go and have been having a completely uncomplicated pregnancy so far. I plan to discuss with my Dr about it at my appt next week

  • I'll be flying to Florida, 2 hour flight at 33 weeks, for my brothers wedding.  I checked with my doctor and he said his rule was no flying past 36 weeks and even then he was hesitant to give a firm no.  I'll also be going to Chicago, 4 hour drive at 35 weeks.  I remember with my 1st pregnancy the doctor just wanted me to make sure I was getting up and walking around every hour or so while traveling.  I don't even think I do that while sitting at my desk all day though :)

  • Thank u ladies for your input. We will be driving to Florida it's about a 4 hour drive... I def plan on talking to my doc tomorrow but hopefully we will get to go! And I'll be able to enjoy it :) I'm just a little bit worried about all the walking and sun. I guess I will just have to stay hydrated and take plenty of breaks.

When I went to Florida my first pregnancy I got the worst sunburn on my legs where I had missed putting the sunscreen.  It ruined the rest of my trip as I could barely walk. the eventual tan/scar took over a year to fade.  I had found out after that sometimes being pregnant can make you more sensitive to the sun.  So be sure to use good sunscreen!

  • We're heading from NH to NC, driving at 36-37 weeks. It's baby number 5, I'm nervous but my doc says scout out the area for the nearest hospital and walk around as much as possible during the driving part. My husbands whole family will be there so at least if it happens I'll have family with us!
  • We just got home from a vacation, we flew 2 hours to Florida, but I was 27 weeks. When my sister in law was 36 weeks her doctor said no to driving 4 hours for her grandfathers funeral, and she had a healthy pregnancy. So some doctors say yes and some say no.
  • Wow ok I will definitely bring some good sunscreen!

Another idea since you're concerned - before you go, look up the local hospitals just so you're familiar with where they are in case you need them. You probably won't, but better safe than sorry!

Definitely will do that also thanks
  • I'm opting to not travel out of town past 35 weeks. Call me silly, but it's just not worth the stress or risk to me. To each her own!
  • I'm 32 weeks with twins and I'm going to Montreal (5 hours drive) this weekend. I'm not exactly happy about it but my husband and his siblings are throwing a surprise party for my I laws so I want to be there.
  • I'm jealous of all the trips everyone has planned! I was put on travel restrictions at 28 weeks. I can't even travel 2 hours to the beach
  • We are traveling to Gatlinburg tomorrow. However we will do half way 4 half hr stop to sleep then get up back on road for another 4 half hr. That would be the easiest way for me to do that.
  • I'm 32 weeks now
  • We just got back from a 10 day trip to Florida. I was 30 weeks. My Dr. Ok'd the trip, but sent me with emergency numbers and my medical history as well. Well, it all ended up coming in handy because i had to make a trip to the emergency room. The heat was affecting me and I started having symptoms of pre term labor. Thank goodness all was well with the baby and he is snug as a bug in there!! I ended up just being dehydrated and over worked. So i guess my advice is to drink way more water than you think you'll need if it will be hot when you visit! I couldn't drink enough of it!! Oh, and limit walking long distances. The heat made my feet swell like nothing I've seen!! Haha It was a great trip other than those few issues! A nice relaxing time before we become a family of 3!! :)
