You should ask your doc. If you are 4cm, they can break the water first. You CAN ASK to have the water broken and WAIT on the Pitocin for a couple hours to see if your contractions/labor starts on its own.
That's what I did for my 2nd induction...it didn't work, but at least I tried to avoid the pit. I was already 3cm and was hopeful that labor would start on its own after the water was broken...but I still needed the Pitocin.
For my 1st induction I was only 1cm, so they broke water and started Pitocin within a few minutes of each other.
I never got induced but when I was going to I asked this and my doctor said no they would give pitocin first--at this time I was already 5cm. Thankfully I didn't have to worry about it
Every doctor is different. The one who was working the night I had my induction said she didn't believe in breaking the water as then you're on a 24 hr timeline to deliver (and avoiding c-section is her practice, as well as was my goal). However she warned me that the doctor coming in after her did the opposite, broke water then pitocin. Luckily mine broke on its own while on pitocin
I am being induced Friday as well! I will be started on the pitocin shortly after I arrive and later my doctor will come in to break my water if it does not happen on its own. She said this way we don't start that 24 hour window before my body is ready and end up with a c-section. I plan to spend most of my time on the birthing ball once I am medicated and hopefully between good positioning and the medicine it will rupture and things will move along quickly!
I was induced Sunday 4/12 n they stripped my membranes & that started contractions & then pitocin & broke my water @ 4cm & after all that whoa contractions hit hard!!!!! My baby boy Colton Maverick was 7lbs 9 oz 20 inches!! We are in love all over!
