Membranes stripped at 38 weeks

Is is possible for a doctor to strip your membranes at 38 weeks or is it something that shouldn't be done till after 40?

  • Yes, they can do it at 38w...but what's the rush?

I had mine stripped at 38w b/c I was already scheduled for a medically indicated induction at 39w.  Stripping at 38w was my one hope at avoiding induction at 39w.  It didn't work...was still induced at 39w.

  • Yes I got mine at 38 weeks bc I was going to get induced at 39. Mine worked and had her that next morning
  • Depends on the doctor. I had one Dr who wanted to do it and another Dr who didn't. Some say yes because they find it less invasive than an induction.
  • Mine did at 39 weeks... but it didn't work, my daughter came at 39w6d naturally.

  • Depends on your doctor and what you have going on. My doctor actually stripped mine at 37 weeks because she was worried about all my swelling. It doesn't work unless baby is ready though. I'm still anxiously waiting for baby at 39 weeks 2 days! I get an induction massage today though, so hoping that does something!

  • Legally they can't induce until 39 weeks unless medically necessary. Stripping your membranes to considered a form of induction.
