Iron supplements

is anyone taking any supplements for low hemoglobin? If so, what was recommended to you? I have a sensitive stomach and a tendency towards constipation so I'm hoping for something gentle.

Re: Iron supplements

  • I take an iron supplement and a stool softener daily. They balance each other out well.

  • I take 2 x 150g (separate times) of one called Feramax. I've done well with it. I do take it with vitamin C to help absorption
  • Try ferrous gluconate instead of the usual ferrous sulfate. I got it at Target. It is slightly more expensive but soooooo worth it because it doesn't cause the same constipation issues as the cheap stuff. I have been on both during my pregnancy and the difference is night and day.
  • Slow release iron is supposed to be easier on your stomach. I think the brand is called Feosol or Slow FE.
  • I use a liquid iron supplement called Floravit - it is what my MW recommended and it doesn't cause constipation and is easily absorbed. You can find it at health supplement stores.

  • I just take one pill of the 300 mg ferrous sulfate daily for the past few months. I also take Metamucil daily to help with the effects of it. I have to take it on a full stomach as well as it makes me super nauseous.
  • I take a generic CVS brand slow release iron (45 mg) and a daily probiotic (Ultimate Flora 15 billion) and have had great success.
  • This is what I take. Hasn't caused me any digestive issues, anemia is gone...

    THIS! No constipation whatsoever

  • Everyone is different... I normally get violent vomiting from iron supplements. But since I have been pregnant it hasn't bothered me.
To combat constipation I recommend high high fiber! So lots and lots of veggies.
Anything OTC that you take make sure it's on your aproved meds list from your doc. If they didn't give you one ask! Huge help! Also communicate any issues with your doc as they may have suggestions for you too...
  • Floradix is an iron supplement with natural herbs as well. It is a refrigerated supplement and you can find it at the health food store. I have always had issues with constipation and with this, have not had an issue since I started taking it!!! Will continue to take it even after I deliver!
