2nd Trimester

Braxton Hicks?

Hi All!

I am currently 26 weeks pregnant.  I have had very few complications or issues (I'm very lucky!).  The other morning, I was laying in bed on my side and got three really severe cramps right in a row.  They were bad enough for me to hold my stomach, call out in pain, and not be able to catch my breath.  They came like waves and were in my lower abdomen.  I moved onto my back and sat up and they went away.  I haven't had any since then and no other symptoms so I'm not really overly concerned, I'm just wondering if you think these were braxton hicks or something else.  Anyone have anything like this?  Everything I read says that braxton hicks aren't normally that strong...

Re: Braxton Hicks?

  • Sounds like Braxton hicks, gas, or possibly rlp to me.

  • Sounds like RLP...my braxton hicks in 2nd tri were uncomfortable but not sharp. Did your belly get hard? That's how I could tell they were BH. I'd still touch base with your Dr next time you see her. Good luck!

  • Round ligament pain is sharp and sometimes can take my breath away, but BH made the belly hard and feel like it was tensing up, not sharp pain. Sometimes a dull ache or cramp with them but nothing sharp.

I'd definitely mention it to your doctor, regardless.
  • It sounds like RLP. If you feel it again, see if it lines up at all with your legs (but up higher, of course). As it sounds like you know, BH is merely a contraction of the uterus. So, flex your bicep. Feel how your arm is hard? Release. Now the muscle is soft. A BH often feels just like that, except a) involuntary so it is surprising and b) the uterus is a much larger so the feeling is striking.
  • Thanks everyone!  Saw my doctor today and she said it could have been a number of things but nothing to worry about since it wasn't consistently happening.  I appreciate all of the info!
