anyone else heard of this? You can find out at like week 12 through a blood test what the sex is? Someone at work told me this, so I have no idea if this is true...
Yes. You can actually find out at 10 weeks. It's part of a genetics screening usually used for couples who have high risks of genetic abnormalities but it is available to anyone. The only problem is that many insurance providers do not cover it because it is unnecessary. Modern medicine is so amazing!
PP is correct. I am hoping I qualify as high risk due to my age (35) so I can have the test done. I've heard you can pay out of pocket to have the test done and it's around $75 but I'm sure it varies. The sooner I know the better so I can shop and plan accordingly!
I forget what it is called but the high-risk specialist I see told me about it yesterday. They said it is the next step if AFP results come back high. They said it is 95% accurate at diagnosing Downs. What it is is a blood test where they look for a tiny bit of baby's DNA in mom's blood and is used to either avoid, or as a precurser to an amnio. It sounded pretty cool! Just wish I could remember the name of the test!

From what I understand, because I'm 38 and have started looking at these things, is that it is a cell free DNA test. It's a blood test and like someone said, they look for baby's DNA in a regular blood draw from the mother. MaterniT21 is one "brand" of the test, but there are others and they screen for Trisomy 13,18,21 and triploidy. They can also tell baby's gender. Some insurance won't cover it and from what I've read, some doctors won't reveal the gender because they don't want people using it as a way to find out gender if they are not otherwise at high risk.
I am planning to do it. I can hardly wait to find out!!! I have read about 3 kinds: Harmony, Verifi, and MaterniT21. They all have different costs. Check with your insurance to see if it is covered because it could be expensive if it's not!
My Drs office uses the Panorama test but they do not check the box for sex results. They have had too many families terminate due to the wrong sex. The pamphlet says they can test as early as 9 weeks but again my office waits till 12 to make sure enough of the babies DNA is in your blood stream. Also mine will be covered because I have a cousin that has downs even though I am 28. I believe at 35 this type of test is routine and covered regardless of family history.
