Any tips on taking the Bar

I will be taking the Bar this July. Since I'll be roughly 8 months pregnant, I'm applying for accommodations. I'd like to be able to bring juice, protein bar, and a seat cushion. I'm also going to request a seat assignment near the bathroom. I've never taken the bar before and this is my first baby. Should I request anything else? Any other general bar suggestions?

What bar are you taking? I took NY, and you could get up to go to the bathroom or stretch whenever you wanted (just cuts into your time). Otherwise I think that the accommodations you are requesting are reasonable. Good luck! I hated the bar, but it feels sooooooo good when it's done!!

  • Honestly it depends on which state you are taking it in. My sister has taken it in both NY and then also in Texas. She said everything was a lot different.
  • I took Maryland, and we were allowed snacks and water. They probably wouldn't have noticed a seat cushion. Seat assignments were pre-set, but we could get up whenever we wanted. Good luck!!
  • What is the bar? I'm sorry lol I'm ftm and I've never heard of it. Seems interesting.

It has nothing to do with babies :). It's the test you take after law school to become a licensed attorney.
  • Lol I didn't think it had to do with babies, bc I was like huh. Lol shows my dumbness

It's not dumb!! You'd have no reason to know about it if you're not a lawyer or employed in some kind of legal-adjacent occupation.
  • What state? I took NY in July 2013 and they allow a drink as long as it is in a clear bottle and a gallon ziplock bag with your ID, pencils, snacks, etc. I packed cliff bars, trail mix and gum for my snacks. And there was time for lunch also. You could get up to use the bathroom at any time, but it cuts into your time, and some seats were pretty far from the bathroom. Good luck!! It's an awful couple months of studying and taking the exam but such a relief to be done!
  • Firstly, good luck! As many of the others have said here, NY allows you to bring snacks and water. I was eating fruit snacks and was super grateful for my bottle of water. Illinois, however, didn't allow us to bring in anything. It never hurts to let the exam board know about your needs, and they'll take your pregnancy into account. Both IL and NY allowed us bathroom breaks. NY was waaay better about the whole thing.

  • Good luck! I also took NY, and like previous posters mentioned, the accommodations you mentioned are basically just standard allowances in NY. it's actually decent timing, since you'll be so distracted by baby coming so you won't obsess over your results every waking second! Then, by the time you get your results (November-ish if I recall correctly) and can start practicing, you'll have had a decent amount of "maternity leave"! Good luck!! It's no easy task!
  • All I gotta say is good luck!!

  • Good luck! My husband took NY (a few times) and it was a beast!!! He passed right before our first LO was born! So hopefully your LO will bring you good luck! Nothing like swearing in with a newborn!
  • There should be a Web address for the rules of your state specific bar exam. I took the bar in Colorado and we were able to bring things in so long as they were in a gallon sized baggie. You can also try talking to career services at your law school for help figuring out restrictions or accommodations as they obviously have an interest in seeing you pass
  • I was so confused as well
