Dilating and effacing

So at my last appointment (36 weeks) I asked my dr when they start checking to see if I am dilated or effaced at all and she said that they really don't do that anymore until I'm in labor. I thought that was kind of weird. Anyone else's dr not checking until go time? Should I maybe request that she checks this at each appointment?

Re: Dilating and effacing

  • This is my third and doctors don't typically check until your overdue. Since I didn't hit my due date with my children, I've only been checked once I'm in labour. Considering you can walk around at 3cm for weeks, I find it kind of pointless to check anyways unless medically necessary.

  • I have a midwife that works out of a hospital and they won't check either. It raises the risk for infection and could give you false hope about when labor may be starting.
  • I am 37 weeks today and I've only been checked once and that was when I had my GBS test and mentioned that I was losing pieces of my mucus plug. It was optional, but I figured she was already there, might as well. I won't get checked again until I'm in labor. Once I'm overdue, I will have an ultrasound to check the baby for position.
  • Same here. My old OB with DS checked at every weekly visit (but maybe because I had gone into pre-term labor beforehand was more at risk), and this new OB group says they don't check. I'm kind of bummed, because it was exciting to learn how far along I was with each visit toward the end (despite the check being uncomfortable).

  • If you want to be checked just ask them to check. My doctor will if I've reported contractions or they witness them on the NST that I do twice weekly.

She wanted to check again today, but I just had it last Thursday. I'd prefer she check as little as possible because not only is it uncomfortable during, but cramping and spotting afterwards happens too.

  • My doctor is checking when I he does the GBS test. At 38 weeks
  • At my last appointment (36 weeks) my OB checked me I was 1 cm dilated and 70% effaced. She will check me every week from here on out! My friend recently had a baby and her OB did the same thing.

Seems like every doctor is different!
  • They offer checks starting at 38 weeks but don't really do them routinely until labor or if you're past due at my hospital.
  • My last appointment i was a day shy of 36 weeks. She asked if i wanted to be checked i said yes out of curiosity. She said next week so 37 she will start checking every week until delivery unless I say I don't want her to. I'm also high risk so idk if she's checking me because of that or if it's just her routine.
  • My midwife only checks at 40 weeks and past. It's kind of annoying but knowing what I'm dilated too early will just drive me crazy!
  • I'm 36 weeks and my dr checks every week from here to delivery. Seems everyone is different, this is my first baby
  • My doctor will start checking tomorrow (37 weeks) and check at every appointment till he comes. I actually thought it was odd that they do this, but I'm grateful for a small heads up (no pun intended)
