Has anyone booked an appointment yet? I've been looking around and getting pricing. Wow! The prices I'm getting are from $425-650. The photographers are booking 4 months in advance for the good ones. I'm starting to see the money pit!! lol.
With my daughter we paid $550 and it took 3.5 months to get the pictures. I was really upset because we didn't have them in time to give to family for Christmas presents. This time I'm hoping to find someone cheaper and get them a lot quicker. My major requirement is that we get the disc to make our own prints instead of purchasing them from the photographer.
Yes you should definitely book now depending on the area you live in. We already booked with the photographer we used last time. She is relatively inexpensive compared to a lot of photographers in the area. We are in Ontario, Canada and its $300 for the newborn plus a maternity shoot. She books like 8 months in advance. We always just get a disc and print out what we want. Everyone always thinks they need all the pictures but really you only use or frame a few so don't go crazy with a 50 image package.
Look into who your hospital uses. Many hospitals now contract with Bella Baby Photography, which is not your typical newborn, mug shot type photography. They do beautiful work!
One of my best friends is a newborn photographer. Those prices sound pretty accurate. But for her she's so fast at getting pictures back to families. Like less than a week fast. She takes amazing pictures so she doesn't need to do a lot of editing. Most do book a few months out. Try and look at it as an investment. Not just spending money. With our first son we went to picture people and let me tell you they suck I tried to save money but it wasn't worth it and my friend wasn't taking pictures yet. With my second son my best friend took them. They are amazing. I babysit for her when she does newborn sessions. A good newborn photographer spends like 4 hours taking pictures. Also they do usually come to your house which is a bonus. With this baby (boy #3) she booked me when I told her at 5 weeks I'm pregnant
I am fortunate that one of my friends is a pretty famous birth photographer here in Ohio and our pricing is not nearly as expensive as what she charges others, but I literally booked her for our maternity, birth, and newborn sessions when I was 10 weeks along! She is already booked clear through December.
A friend recommended their baby photographer and looking at the website, it was a deal for 3 hours for $195 for a three hour session with copyright and disc copy.
So we bought a digital SLR last year, so I plan to do a lot of the photos mysel, including maternity. I probably will do a newborn/family portrait, but definitely agree with the disc of images. I have someone who I've worked with before and am comfortable with. While good photographers are expensive, keep in mind you aren't just getting photos but edited images etc. And definitely good customer service is key.
But the overall plan is probably mini sessions with the photographer maybe yearly and we will do all the other photos with our camera.
Hi! I am a newborn photographer so can probably help out a bit. If you have questions, feel free to ask.
Just remember, you get what you pay for. Just because a photographer is cheap doesn't mean said photog will be professional, and probably hasn't paid for the extra training to photograph a baby safely. I'd choose a photographer based off of experience, style, and professionalism. Then lastly, price. Your baby will only be tiny for a short period of time, and you'll want quality images to look back on :-)
I booked a newborn package today with our wedding photographer was was amazing!
For $1150, we get a newborn session for three hours (10 days after birth at our home) and three 1.5 hour sessions throughout baby's first year of life. We get the photos on a disc for our use.
I'm a newborn photographer newborn photos are an investment, your baby will never be a newborn again! The lashes, pouty lips, little rolls and soft baby curls are all thing you will never want to forget, and it's so great to have them captured up close and perfectly. Unlike a set of nails or other things people pay ridiculous amounts for that don't last, these photos last a lifetime and preserve the most special memories! It is very time consuming (I have spent 6+ hours before photographing really fussy babies), props and outfits cost a ton of money and most people want something different than anyone else has had (I have paid $40-$60 for a pair of pants and hat), editing time is very extensive in comparison to a regular session(rashes, scratches, redness, jaundice) and let's not forget setup, takedown, cleanup /laundry time and all of the equipment, software, business insurance etc. etc. etc. I booked my session as soon as we found out we are expecting. I will be paying $750 for about 30 digital images and believe it is worth every penny, she is amazing. It is something I am saving for, and having an experienced photographer who is knowledgeable in baby safety and produces the highest quality images is very important to me! Of course everybody's budgets are different and not everybody can afford to have the sessions done, but these photos are priceless, timeless and so worth the investment if you can make it
I am so very lucky. My niece is an amazing professional photographer. She is doing my maternity shots and newborn shots as a gift. I am north of Boston and I know the prices are high around here.
My husband and I both do some photography. We each have our own DSLR and I did my own newborn photos. It is an investment that I cannot talk myself into paying for. I just got creative with what I had at home and have actually done photos for friends that couldn't afford to get professional ones done. The photo below window lighting, a sheet as a backdrop. I don't have the NB photos on my phone, but this one is about 6 months. Nothing special. It's all a personal preference.
I plan to have a family portrait done by a friend...probably in our bedroom...and am going to do my littles nb picture myself and have the pictures from Bella baby from the hospital too! I did have both of my other kids births photographed but we don't have the money for it now so I am hoping I don't regret it..I guess I could always change my mind before sept!
I assist a Newborn Photographer. We charge $450/ session with a print right to a designated place, that we know produce affordable, quality prints . They are absolutely and investment & would also recommend not waiting to book, most just require a retainer to hold your spot. I know this seems like a lot of money, but it is truly worth the money to be able to capture such an innocent time in their lives.
We did a maternity-newborn combo for $350 last pregnancy. I have a friend who's daughter is a professional photographer so we got a little bit of a deal seeing as she came to our house for the newborn shoot and we had a hour and a half maternity shoot. She also offered to come to the hospital as part of the package but with my stressful delivery we waited until ten days. She also gave us a one month Pass account which was a website with all of the pictures properly edited that I could save or purchase prints from. We have since become good friends so hopefully I'll get a better deal this time!
I recommend using Shutterfly for their Photo Books once you have your prints or disc. The quality is better than Walgreens (I've made plenty through both companies) and their editing system is much easier to navigate. It's turns a regular photo album into the quality of a magazine! They also have an unlimited availability for storing and organizing photos.
I already booked our newborn photographer; our friend has used this photographer for her kids and the photos are amazing! The photographer does photos in her home studio and has tons of different backgrounds and props, and since this is her side job and she only does it on weekends, it's not as expensive as a full-time professional photographer. We'll be paying $200 for our newborn session that includes a 2-hour session, unlimited poses and outfit changes, 30-40 high resolution edited images, and a print release for all of the images. We also plan on purchasing the first year package which includes 3, 6, 9, and 12 month photo sessions for $500 (with 30-40 photos each time and the print release). If you're worried about cost, I would ask your friends with kids who they have used and look into photographers who may do this as a side business (just check out their photos and references and make sure you like their style and professionalism first).
