Is labour close?

so I spotted last week, only one time and it was dark coloured but still had me worried. Also yesterday had such awful pack pains and it went through to my pelvic region and lower stomach. I noticed when I went for a shower that Iv started dilating. Today I checked again and I'm close to 2cm I'd say but could be off. But Iv had some back pain today but not as bad as it was yesterday.
When should I contact the doctors, if I should at all? This is my first and I'm really worried it's coming to happen sooner than expected.

  • Agreed. Now would be a fine time to call your drs offfice / hospital / labor and delivery room. Better safe than sorry

  • She shouldn't be able to reach her cervix. Not plausible.
  • This post seems more like a plant asking for flaming replies.... I don't know there's been a few of these lately....

How are you checking your own cervix ? This is disturbing. Do not put your hands up there.

I was wondering about this myself - I Dr Googled it. There are quite a few websites that are happy to tell you to stick your finger up there and feel (or have your partner do it). One says "its not rocket science". I don't mean to be snarky, OP, it may not be rocket science, but it IS *medical* science. If you're a doctor, then great. But if not I would have a doctor check it and leave that to the professionals.
Also, my previous statement still stands. I would call labor and delivery / your drs office. Good luck, gal

  • But you don't need to be the flames or give the flaming replies. If she knows the answer , she wouldn't ask.
  • I agree that the best thing to do is call your doctor about checking you out.  Especially with June being a bit of ways still.

It's disturbing that there are website stating to try and check your own cervix. So weird. You shouldn't be able to reach your cervix..........ick. I would NOT do this. Everytime you put your hand in there your introducing infection as well into your vagina. But these are just my thoughts based on a job I do. This person will do whatever she wants anyways....

A little TMI but I checked my cervix around ovulation to get pregnant with my second child. I know more about my body than my Dr at this point. Lol

Having said that.. I'm pregnant and don't want to take the chance of introducing anything in there.

If she is in fact 2 cm. ..I agree she needs to see a Dr now. Cramps sound like pre labor....
  • It is definitely possible to feel your own cervix and as long as your hands are clean it's no more dangerous than putting a penis in there. I would still call te doc or have them check that you sent in active later.

I would suggest medical gloves... Under your nails is way worse than a penis. Lol

Yeah, I did cervical checks while TTC, always doing thorough handwashing first, it's not an uncommon variable to chart. I don't know what would make a cervix more difficult to reach during pregnancy, I mean, the it's not like the bump is preventing me from wiping.

Checking your own cervix isn't crazy. You're supposed to check for your strings periodically when you have a Mirena. One of the ways to track ovulation is to check the feeling of your cervix. I don't see why it's a terrible thing to check yourself when you're in labor either. Safely of course. I think it could be empowering to know where you are at.
  • I use a sterile glove to check others cervix and usually have to reach pretty damn far up there..... More power to you guys.
  • I have to agree with others it's not crazy to check your cervix as long as your being careful and really clean about it. Would definitely call the doc about it though to make sure good luck with everything have a safe and happy pregnancy/labor :)

OP if your worried or concerned at all don't write it on here.. Call your doctor or L&D! Your obviously worried if you are checking your cervix - I had horribly bad visuals when I read that she thinks she may be 2cm dilated.. - then you are obviously concerned! Go get checked.

Edited:- I quoted wrong thing. But seriously if you don't have training ect.. Or your not entirely sure what you are doing don't stick anything up there... Ouch!

I remember going I with my last pregnancy to get checked for PTL at 28 weeks. DH was pretty shocked to see how far up the nurses hand went to check my cervix.

  • Did you get an update?
  • Clean or not, there's a reason docs wait til 36 weeks to check your cervix. It can actually cause preterm labor if you are checking too frequently/too early etc.

Wow, I had no idea checking your cervix was a thing Google has proven me wrong. Apparently you can "measure" by testing how many fingers you can get into your cervix when you stick your fingers up your vagina. Each finger is like a cm wide so 2 fingers =2 cm. You can feel either your waters or the head. My warning system is going off that it's probably a bad idea to be feeling around up there with any regularity, or pushing fingers through the cervix to your water bag. So I'm going to go ahead and never do this. I sure hope that those who do have some guidance from some med professional if they chose to!

The website I found says "it's not rocket science" but it is medical science which is just as advanced so color me skeptical. As skeptical as I am when posters declare that midwives know more about birth than any OB/GYN. Or that they know more than their doctor because they have the Internet and intimate knowledge of their symptoms.

Ok, I'm done being curmudgeonly. Now get off my lawn!

  • I don't even want my OB checking my cervix. I will allow it later on, but it makes me cringe nonetheless.

OP, from my reading of this, you deserve to be flamed if only because of how you described what you're doing. "I noticed when I went for a shower that I've started dilating." Um, no, you didn't "notice," you very purposely checked. It's little things like that that rub people the wrong way. It makes you look foolish because it sounds like you're trying to justify the freakish thing you're doing - checking your cervix DAILY at 30 weeks (or whatever). Good luck, girl.

This. For sure. Even if you (and others) think checking your cervix is a good idea. I can assure you that aside from the bacteria you may be introducing into yourself, you are putting yourself at risk of artificially rupturing your membranes. While it's not super easy to do, it can happen and that would be bad news (especially at 30 weeks). Why on earth would you want to risk early labour/delivery of a 30 week old fetus.

ETA: To the penis comment poster, while you make the argument that a penis and fingers may be equally clean/dirty (which I don't necessarily agree with), penises are not sharp, finger nails are and can for sure put a hole in your amniotic sac.

I agree that checking your own cervix isn't sensible in case you put your finger through the sac or the placenta.

However, noone "deserves to be flamed" - let's chill here. We may be talking to a woman who's going into premature labour and she said she is worried. I'd be scared shitless. Let's give her some support.

ETA: Re-worded my sentencing to reflect my meaning better.
  • Has she been back to check the responses? Update?
  • The cervix isn't that far up unless you are laying on your back. Still let's keep our fingers out of our vaginy! 8-}
