I'm sure this has been asked before, but for some reason nothing is pulling up when I search. Are there any parenting books about the newborn - first year stage that you recommend?
I haven't actually read it yet, but 'The Happiest Baby on the Block' has been recommended to be several non-related sources, including my pediatrician's office, the woman who taught our child care class, and a good friend. So I just picked up a copy. I've also heard that 'Bringing Up Bebe' is good.

I would recommend the Happiest Baby on the Block and Calm the Crying: The Secret Baby Language that Reveals the HIdden Meaning Behind an Infant's Cry by Priscilla Dunstan
Ditto to the previous posters. There's also a Happiest Baby on the Block DVD that we checked out at the library. It was so much quicker than reading the book - and some of the tips did work for us (like the sideways hold & and "shhhh"-ing).
If you are breastfeeding, I would recommend The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding from the La Leche League. I also got some good tips from Secrets of the Baby Whisperer by Tracy Hogg.
