I haven't posted on here, but after yesterday of seeing my high risk specialist for the 2nd time. I left my doctor very upset just because of the way he treats me. At the beginning of my 3rd trimester my ob told me that they saw excess fluid on the brain, it has turned out to be mild ventricularonmy ( not sure I have spelled it correctly). The specialist then has been pushing for chromosome testing, which won't make a difference because I wouldn't change what I was doing with my baby. And I really don't want to worry the rest of my pregnancy. Well yesterday he told me that the limbs were measuring behind( which they always have, but they are still growing each time). And that my baby could have downs or trisonominy. I understand that there was a risk, but right now in utero there is nothing we could do about it. The baby could come out with nothing wrong. He then goes on to tell me because I am refusing the chromosome testing I need to get an aminio. And an amino can hurt my unborn child ( his words not mine). The vibe I am getting from him is that if something was wrong I should abort my child and that he really doesn't care about babies or pregnant women.
Has anyone else had a high risk specialist that doesn't seem to care for them as a patient or their unborn child? I know it's his job to be blunt but what it feels like is he really wants to push these tests and has very little regard for human life.
Re: Has anyone had problems with your high risk doctor?
That being said, if you are uncomfortable with the way he is going about your prenatal care, I would seriously consider switching high risk doctors. You need to be comfortable with the person responsible for the care of you and your LO.
I think you are misreading his desire to get more information as a disregard for the care of your baby. He wants the info so he can be more prepared, so the hospital can be prepared, and so you can be prepared for the birth. Perhaps a certain diagnosis would change your delivery venue, or require the NICU staff be present at birth to treat the baby. If you know that baby has a specific diagnosis, they know what problems to look for (heart/lungs/organs) at birth rather than waiting for post-delivery testing to provide results.
All that being said - if you are not comfortable with an amnio - that is your choice to make. Ask what NON-invasive test can be done prior to birth. Perhaps the Materni21 test is an option that would shed some light on baby's genetic makeup.
I hope there are no issues - but like the previous poster said....his bedside manner might just suck.
He wouldn't be in this job if he was just out to abort any 3rd tri babies that had abnormalities. He's trying to gather information so he can help you and your baby the best way he knows how - by being prepared for what will be encountered at birth.
