Smoking

Hi all,

So I found out last week I was expecting. I think I'm approximately 6 weeks along. I have been smoking for about 8 years, and am finding it very hard to quit. It was suggested that I try to cut down instead of quitting cold turkey as it could me more harmful to my body and the baby. I usually smoke about a pack a day, and am down to about 6-8 cigarettes a day. It is not easy by any means. I fear that I won't be able to stop :( has anyone else been in this situation that could offer encouragement or advice to keep cutting back and quit?

Re: Smoking

  • I was a pack a day smoker when I got pregnant with my first. I was told not to quit cold turkey also. By the end of my pregnancy I was down to 1 cigarette a day (the one with my cup of coffee in the morning). The few days in the hospital, when my first was born, helped me quit. I have been smoke free for 5 1/2 years. Someone in another post suggested the e-cigs and take your butts put them in a jar with water and every time you want a cigarette open the lid and smell that. Sounds like it could work. It is hard. I've been there. Just keep trying. Best of luck to you.

  • I have quit with my last two pregnancies. It took me four weeks both times to quit 100%. I will also give myself the same with this one! Don't be too hard on yourself. As long as your trying to do what's best for baby that's all that matters!! My problem is I go back to smoking once baby is out:(

  • Don't be hard on yourself, it will make it worse! Set a date that you feel comfortable with and go down til that date. With my first it was immediate. I had a harder time with this one.

  • Don't be too hard on yourself. I used a vape pen for the last year. When I found out I switched to 0 nicotine. But now the juice is making me nauseous so I've been nicotine free. Try a vape pen make sure to read the ingredients on the liquid

Vape pen as in an e cig? Or are they different?
  • I was thinking about doing a e-cig but was unsure I been smoking and craving them more now kicking the addiction is harder than I thought I always said if I have a baby I would stop smoking just cold turkey but I'm almost 5 weeks and I smoke at least 3-4 within a full day but sometimes it may be less than that cause I get light headed now , for the ones who struggle with kicking the addiction in the early stages we all just need motivation together cause I be chew gum and having a attitude because when I'm at work and I have a break in normally outside with my fellow smokers now I'm just twiddling my thumbs chewing gum :D
  • @kirstendavis same thing the vape pen just allowed me to try a bunch of different flavors

Work time is the toughest...definitely twiddling of the thumbs over here!

  • This discussion has been helpful! Nice to know others have been through this! Thanks so much everyone! I have an e cig actually, tucked back in a drawer somewhere. I'll be pulling that out and putting it to use!
  • I just saw a segment on Good Morning America about e cigarettes blowing up. I'm also quitting and thought about doing that but now I'm nervous! Always something!! Congrats to all of you and good luck!
  • I'm definitely am going to download this app !
  • I was in the same boat except I've smoked for 15 years! Gross! I heard about a book called the easy way to be smoke free by Allen Carr. I read the book in 2 days and have been smoke free since the 8th. I haven't been moody or had intense cravings. The book is amazing!
  • I am also having bad cravings! Nothing seems to work. I have the smoke free app too but I always give in and then re-set the time
  • It has been super hard for me too!!! Everyone is super judgemental because I was told I could never have children, and here I am, preggers with my first. I always said that getting pregnant would be when it would be "so easy to just quit". Yeah. Not so easy. I am so thankful I'm not the only one struggling here!!

I'm on day three smoke free. It's hard. There actually isn't much truth to "quitting cold turkey causes stress for the baby." Work is the hardest for me. Yesterday was so busy and I craved one so bad.
As for e-cigs, they make me nervous. They haven't been studied like real cigarettes. I would rather smoke a cig than vape.
