SPD

For those of you who have or have had SPD, how did you know you had it? Also, has your doctor been able to do anything for you if you have been diagnosed?
I explained my symptoms to my doctor and she chalked it up to typical end of pregnancy symptoms. Everything I read on Dr. Google sounds to me like I have SPD though - pain in the groin when walking, rolling over in bed, standing up from sitting or lying down position, getting dressed, etc. I understand everyone experiences some discomfort down there as they near the end but this pain seems pretty extreme. I'm 34w1d...not sure I can go another 6 weeks like this. Just looking for some insight.

Re: SPD

  • I diagnosed myself with it . Ha! I told my dr and he was just like there's not much to do about it but said I could try a chiropractor. I've never been to one and I don't want to start now. It is super painful but either it has gotten a little better or I'm just getting more used to it. I definitely hurts really bad to move in bed and get dressed . I'm sorry I have no suggestions to help but just know I feel your pain!

  • I have SPD, I got it from a running injury during 3rd tri of my last pregnancy. It separated during a run. This time it came back early on due to relaxin. My OB warned me that would likely happen. When I was first diagnosed I described my symptoms and my OB examined me.

The best way I can describe it is it's like someone had batting practice on my crotch. It's concentrated right on the front of my crotch on the pubic bone. Very sharp, intense pain from doing basically anything that involves the legs moving independently.

Crotch pain at this point is normal but SPD takes it to another level. I can't even walk to the end of the block without getting tears in my eyes.

Hang in there, it's all temporary and I felt a million times better immediately after birth.

  • Oh - and as far as what you can do - not much. I went to a physical therapist that gave me some exercises (like squeezing something between my knees) and advised me to pretend I was wearing a mini skirt at all times in order to keep my legs together. I also have a prescription belly belt thing that was expensive and doesn't really help. The best thing For me has been to just honor my limits and rest.

  • I was diagnosed with this last week at almost 35 weeks. This is my 3rd child, and I never had this issue with the other 2. The pain has been so awful! They sent me to the physical therapist for a belly belt and suggested taking extra strength Tylenol. With a combination of those things and really just limiting all my activity to almost nothing, it has gotten a lot better. If I start doing more, I can notice the pain coming back. The good news is, I've been told it usually goes away with delivery!
