Protein Shakes Safe to take?

I Work 12hr shifts, which makes for a long day. Hard to get enough protein, and thought it would be helpful to add whey protein into my green Shakes.

Re: Protein Shakes Safe to take?

  • I don't see why they wouldn't be safe. It's not like you're adding a preworkout powder like c4. I've done protein shakes a few times because I wanted to get more protein than I was getting.

  • I freaked out mid-pregnancy with DD because I hadn't noticed on the label of my protein that it says not to use if pregnant or nursing, but when I talked to my OB, she assured me it was safe. They often have to put it on the label of many supplements sold in health food stores. As with anything, check your specific protein with your OB. I use mine each morning in a protein shake and it's delicious :)

  • I met with a dietician at my ob office and she actually recommended protein shakes! I work 12 hr shifts as well. She recommended a scoop of protein powder, 1/2 c milk, Greek yogurt and fruits, +ice and water if needed.
  • My dr recommend ensure.
  • @meggyhoff, that sounds right! If we're recommending recipes for smoothies, too, I highly recommend freezing your fruit (peel bananas, break them up into pieces) so you don't have to add ice and dilute it.

I LOVE 10-12 oz of water, 1 frozen banana, 1 T peanut butter, 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder. YUM. I also recommend blending ingredients and then adding protein powder at the end to decrease the amount of air bubbles you consume (this can lead to intestinal discomfort!).

Another one: 8 oz of water, 3-4 oz. orange juice, 3/4 cup frozen strawberries, 1/2 frozen banana (BLEND), then 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder. Double yum. ENJOY!

  • My dr. said they're ok, just watch for artificial sweeteners and make sure there's no caffeine like in pre-workout

I have an aversion to most meat and am drinking protein shakes to hopefully get enough in my diet. Totally safe. The best to get is high protein powder with low car's, low sugar content
  • I used Special K shakes for a while but they caused tummy troubles. I'm trying to get protein from food instead.

Do you have a particular brand that you suggest? I really should/could add some protein to my fruit smoothies (just fruit/spinach/water). I'm currently just too lazy to try to research this. ;)

  • They all seem to have artificial sugar in them:( any reccomendations??
  • I asked my ob if they were safe to drink because I have been having terrible "morning sickness" that lasts into the afternoon, evening, and night. She said they were safe to drink but I feel guilty having one everyday like I'm not supposed to be doing it all the time. I've been using Shaklee. It has b6 and b12 in it as well to help with the nausea.
  • When I was having trouble eating (my entire first trimester) my doctors recommended I drink an Ensure (original, not active or any of the other crazy ones) once or twice a day to give me necessary nutrients. I still have one every morning when I first get up because it is easier to drink than eat in the morning. As long as you aren't using them as your ONLY food source all day they are fine.
  • awesome thank you ladies for the reassurance! Meggyhoff which protein Shake brand do you use?
