Postpartum back pain

Hey everyone! Recently I've been getting a strong pain coming from my back these couple of days. Im 5 weeks postpartum and Im worried it might be something serious. My pain is literally in the middle of my back and sometimes it goes a bit higher. Its uncomfortable to sleep on my sides for too long and i can only sleep on my back. I have to sit up straight so it doesn't hurt but you know thats annoying. Have any of you guys experienced this? I get the feeling this is the after pain of getting an epidural. Ive had some advil which only helps temporarily and ive done the iceyhot patch but it still comes back :( please help!

Re: Postpartum back pain

  • I have this exact same thing in the place where my epidural was. I also have a headache and pain all the way up my spine to my neck.

I have read about epidural causing long-lasting pain because it weakens the muscles in your lower back. It could also be carrying your little one/ sitting down for long periods feeding etc.

That said it's definitely worth mentioning to your GP... I'm going to if I am still in pain at my 6 week checkup.

    Hope you feel better!

  • I would think it may have more to do with muscle strain related to picking up and caring for a baby rather than from the epidural. It is possible, especially if associated with a headache, but just seems less likely. Definitely bring it up to your primary care provider if it persists. Sometimes physical therapy can help with ongoing back issues. Typical back pain related to injury or strain can take 6-12 weeks to improve, and after that is likely to recur. If you are cleared by your OB to exercise, stretching and moderate activity like walking can help. Good luck and hope you find some relief!

A headache may indicate an issue stemming from the epidural site. You may be leaking spinal fluid, which is a simple fix, but should be mentioned to your doctor sooner than later.

  • Thanks guys! I will be going to the doctor early this morning and i hope this pain is relieved soon!!
  • I had this exact pain with my first baby. I was told it was from the epidural and it lasted close to 6 months for me. I didn't get an epidural this time and haven't had any back pain at all so I'd have to agree that it was probably from the epidural. See your Dr about it. I hope it gets better!
