Falling asleep with baby...

Our little one just will not sleep these past few days unless my husband or I am holding him! We keep falling asleep holding him, but I am so worried I will smother him in my sleep. Anyone else have this problem? Or maybe tricks for keeping him asleep for more than ten minutes in his crib?

Re: Falling asleep with baby...

  • We are guilty of the same thing but usually after an overnight feeding. I've been trying to hold her in a cradle position rather than on my chest so that way when I lower her into the crib it's not a drastic change in position for her.

  • Are you swaddling? That's the only thing that keepsmy baby asleep when he's not being held.

I usually will hold DD in a cradle position for at least 10 minutes after she's done eating. I always swaddle as well. Some things that work if your baby wakes up as soon as you put them down are slightly elevating the crib or PNP so that they are on an angle or using a heating pad to keep the bed warm until you out the baby back in.

If you can't put him down and you chose to sleep with him I usually do one of two things. Lay down on your back with your arm behind baby's head to keep her flat on her back. I also will sleep sitting up with pillows behind me so that I can recline. I always use a breast friend and hold her cradle position.

With DS I felt much more nervous about rolling on him but the above solutions have worked well for me.

I know a it can be frustrating but enjoy the snuggles! This will definitely pass and you won't be able to do this forever.

    Hope this helps!
  • Thank you for the tips. I have been swaddling him after feeding, and he always wakes up when I swaddle him. I should probably swaddle him before feeding so I can just move him right to the crib.
  • Try swaddling before the last feeding. I have a routine of change diaper, swaddle, lights off (just a small lamp on), THEN feed, burp/cuddle and lay her down. Has worked so well! She doesn't fuss when I swaddle her anymore (she did tho for the first two weeks probably) I also put on white noise during the feeding and keep the white noise on. She sleeps all through the night almost every night!
