Green Tea while pregnant

Every morning I have green tea to start off my day. I literally just have it once a day and majority of the time since I found out I was pregnant, I usually cut half the dosage recommended because of the caffeine. I've been reading a lot today how green tea is bad for the baby especially during the first trimester. I am completely embarrassed and I already feel like a horrible mother for which I didn't know how bad it actually was for the baby. I'm about 7/8 weeks. I don't go to the doctors until the 23rd and I will definitely mention this when I go to the doctors. Sorry for the long paragraph but do you think I am fine or should I be really worried?

Re: Green Tea while pregnant

  • Green tea prevents absorption of folic acid. If you're not taking extra already I would start now. Also this is my second pregnancy and I started drinking it in the beginning not thinking and just stopped when I realized.

  • Don't feel bad, you've just taught me something and I'm on baby #3! These things can happen, they're always changing what they do and don't recommend during pregnancy. Mention it to your doc and just cut it out from now x
  • I had no idea about green tea! Thanks for sharing this. I've been drinking green tea in the AM a few times per week thinking it was a better choice than coffee because it has less caffeine...but maybe I'm better off with just my usual small coffee. Does anyone know if black tea has the issues?
  • Thanks so much everyone who commented. I am going to stop from here on out! Also, I'm not too sure about black tea. Realistically I thought green tea would've been a better option for caffeine but it seems as though a cup of coffee a day or so is a lot better. I do Herbalife and there's this tea called "N-R-G" that is supposedly really safe during pregnancy and keeps you energized so I am going to buy that in replace of having caffeine.
  • If you are doing black tea at home, you can add an inch of hot water to seep for two minutes, then dump that and pour a full cup. That will seep the majority of the caffeine out of the tea and leave you with decaf. It's not caffeine free but it's better than fully caffeinated.

Black tea does not inhibit the absorption of folic acid, like green tea does.

I was on Herbalife prior to getting pregnant and even though my rep said it's all safe, my OB said to stop it immediately. I would double check with your doctor just to be safe. She did tell me black tea is safe though, so hopefully that helps! This is my first pregnancy too so we're all learning!

  • My doctor had no problem with me drinking green tea once a day. He just advised to not do more than one cup because of caffein.
