The SPD Blues

Hello! I'm due next Sunday April 19th & have been telling my doc about this Syndrome I research, because of all this pain I've been experiencing in my private area. When I looked it up, I got answers from a diagnosis called "Symphysis Pubic Dysfunction" it feels like being kicked in your private when I walk and move around. Research says it's caused by the pelvic bone which is normally aligned, becoming to relaxed and stretchy comparible to early prep for childbirth. My doc says I have to just be patient and wait it out and that I can take pain reliever. He also suggested getting a belly belt to lift my belly off my uterus. Has anyone else experienced anything similar or heard of such thing?

Re: The SPD Blues

  • I feel the same thing. My doc also just said sorry you gotta wait til baby is out. Ive felt it for months. Its sucks!

  • Yep it hurts it totally sucks I feel your pain! Will end after baby is here

  • Yep. Mine is in my hip. Even had a hip pop in and out of place. Horrible pain, but just one of those things we have to wait out until the baby is out. Warm baths help take the weight off, and Tylenol helps with the pain. Most people get over it after birth, however for some, it persists after the baby is born. I'm hoping mine goes away after birth....
  • Yeah I get this, it really sucks. It's especially bad if you've been sitting or lying down for a while. It kills me every time I have to get up at night.
  • It hit early and hard with my 1st baby, so I was in Physical Therapy to learn how to move w/o hurting myself.  At this point, you just need to wait it out.  It does get better after delivery.

  • I've found the pelvic support belt really helps relieve/prevent the pain when you are on your feet for any length of time. Both my physio and OB recommended the support belt, apparently it helps keep your pelvis in line and the pubic bones from moving around too much which leads to the pain. Hope you find some relief!
  • It doesn't go away right after baby but after u start losing the weight... Had it with my daughter and have had it since my second trimester with this baby... Just know that most people that have it have it onset worse and earlier with evey subsequent pregnancyw
  • I had that during a good chunk of my pregnancy (Baby arrived last week!). It was so bad somedays, that I was physically unable to walk (not good for someone who nannies for a living...kids' needs don't stop just because you're hurt), and I cried a lot. This was my only negative pregnancy symptom...so I never complained even when I was in terrible pain. I too kept reading that it doesn't go away till birth, but I refused to deal with that till the end. My chiropractor ended up helping me BIG time around 32/33 weeks. I told her the SPD wasn't getting better (she knew what it was), and whatever she did to me that day was wonderful!!! I could still feel soreness once in awhile after that, but never again did I have pain or a trigger that left me unable to walk/move. So I absolutely suggest talking to a chiropractor (preferably a more natural one) about it. I'm sure it will give you relief!
  • It makes me feel better that I'm not alone on this! Still no sign of my daughter making her appearance yet but I'm hopeful to go on time :) and not have to worry about this anymore, Thank you all for the positive feedback and advice!

  • I have this as well, it's very painful especially when I am lying down at night. My doctor advised me to ice the area but I don't find much relief. Interesting that someone above mentioned that their chiropractor helped them. I've been going to my chiropractor throughout my entire pregnancy (due April 25th) but it's something I haven't thought about mentioning to her. Definitely going to bring it up at my next visit! Anyone have other suggestions for pain relief of SPD? Does perineal massage help with this because I have also looked into that?
  • It's really painful at night with me too & if I sit to long then try to stand up :( I hope your chiropractor can help you out. Good Luck!
