Breastfeeding and formula

I am currently both breastfeeding and giving my baby formula. I was using the enfamil pre made bottles but tonight I'm switching to the powder one because I think that's what they're going to give me at WIC and I want my baby to get used to it. Any tips on how to properly make the bottle? I read somewhere about it having bubbles and causing Colics. Is this true? I'm really scared for my baby to get Colics :( any info will help. Thanks! FTM.

Re: Breastfeeding and formula

  • I currently am doing the same thing with my newborn, he was born via c section on the 29th of March at 9:13pm. During the day I give him breast milk and at night I give him enfamil formula. So far he hasn't had any problems with it at all, and when I was in the hospital they gave us the premade enfamil bottles and when we got home I started the powder. With the powder to make 4oz bottle it was 2 scoops of powder and 4oz of water, and my little one drinks it like its wine from the gods lol Granted he spits up a little more with the formula but that's normal.

  • I've heard to pour water into bottle first then add the formula after. Supposedly baby gets more gas if you do powder first then water.
  • 2 oz of water per scoop of formula is correct, but it's a good habit to check the can. As far as gas/colic goes, it doesn't necessarily hurt the baby, but it can stress the parent out. Sometimes checking and trying different bottles can help, ie Dr. Brown's anti-colic bottle. And also keep in mind, if you feel that the baby is doing great with breastfeeding and you can do night feeds, you don't need the formula from WIC.
  • Also, formula can slow down the Nobel movements,so don't be surprised if the color and frequency change.
  • I'm also breastfeeding and supplementung, and I'm using an Anti-colic bottle from Munchkin. I stopped using Enfamil, though, and switched to Gerber.
  • I was doing both at first but ended up switching strictly to formula after returning to work. I purchased a baby brezza formula pro that was on sale at sams club. It holds the water and keeps it warm and the powdered formula ready to mix in whatever amount you select. It makes a bottle in about 10 seconds. It's come in REALLY handy at night when she wakes up and I'm half asleep making a bottle in one hand and her in the other.
  • We have done the same thing with our LO since about a week old. I breastfeed during the day and formula at night. We use gerber supplementing and have had no problems whatsoever. We make the bottles and then try to let them sit for a minute or so to let bubbles come down. But we burp our daughter every ounce or two to try to stay ahead. Thanks to the pp though about the formula pro - never knew about that, gonna def look into it! Sounds like a gift for during the night!
