Support to quit smoking

hi ladies, not on here to be judged, just looking for support and advice. Have just found out I'm 6w pregnant, it was a complete surprise and not planned. I have cut back on the cigarettes by more than 50% in the week since I found out I'm pregnant. Does anyone have any ideas/tips/advice on how to stop smoking completely (ideally without me turning in to a complete physco, the hormones are doing a good enough job of that at the moment)??

Re: Support to quit smoking

  • Gum? Or switch to one of the modified nicotine e cigs where you can get a low dose like 6 or 0 mg nicotine fluid level.

I quit (finally) by reading Allen Carr's "The EasyWay to Quit Smoking" book---I know, I know it sounds like a fad type thing but seriously it's the ONLY way to quit successfully and it really does work.  You have to WANT to quit though, but I highly suggest reading it...I bet after a few pages, you won't be able to stop reading!  Good luck!:)

When I quit I ate hot tamales (the little cinnamon candies) like they were going out of style. Drink lots of water too, to help process out the chemicals.
Also find a accountability partner that is around you the majority of your day, that you tell your quitting. And tell yourself that you won't!

I was in your same boat with my first pregnancy. I worked with a bunch of women and told them of my pregnancy early. Then I felt as if I couldn't smoke at work, so I just dropped it! Hope that helps some!

Here for you! I know it's a toughie!!
  • You can also call 1-800-QUIT-NOW to get connected with a Quit Coach (and if that's only specific to my state, then I apologize in advance).

  • I was a heavy smoker for a long time and quit by cutting down and then using hypnosis. One session was enough for me. Best of luck!
  • I was in the same boat, when I found out I was pregnant at 4 weeks I cut back each day for a about a week and then 2 weeks ago quit at 5 weeks. Now I have almost 13 days smoke free. (I've been a smoker for 15 years so it is a big deal to me!) The first couple days I really had to just take it one hour or even couple minutes at a time. I made a list of all the reasons I wanted to quit smoking, I bought lots of hard candy and pretty much always had one in my mouth and I told people I was quitting to keep me accountable. If you ever wanna talk to somebody about it let me know!
  • I've heard that going in a sauna for three days straight will help sweat out the nicotine in your system. Just remember that you want the best for your baby no matter what it takes!!

Just a quick thought about pregnancy and saunas. Quoted from the online "What to Expect When You're Expecting":

"anything that raises your core body temperature to over 102 degrees is potentially hazardous to your baby-to-be, especially during the early months of pregnancy when his body and brain are developing"

  • I quit cold turkey after smoking 2 packs a day for years. Been 10 years and I haven't relapsed once. Everyone is different so I like the advice of calling a quit hotline and talking with a coach. They can probably tailor a program specific for you.

Good luck and just remember you CAN quit!! You got this!!

The nicotine stays in your system for 72 hours anyways. And that's how long the chemical addiction lasts. The hardest part of quiting is the mental addiction and the behavioral modification. My doctor told me to not quit, but to cut down because I am high risk for miscarriage. The stress could cause one. So, make sure to take it at a pace you can handle. I've cut down from one pack a day to half a pack in a week, and I'm working on cutting down some more. Good luck!
  • I quit smoking when I was 5 months pregnant with my DS. I had cut back a lot when I first found out but it was very difficult for me to just quit. I realized the damage I was doing to him and just stopped one day. After I gave birth, I took a drag of a cigarette and got so physically ill (I actually thought I was dying and no I'm generally not dramatic) I never had another one again. Just remembering that feeling was enough. Been smoke free for 5 years. You can do this! You'll feel so amazing when you do too! Good luck!
  • I've been a smoker for forever and I hate to be the one that says "I just quit" but I did. I chewed tons of gum and vitamin C is supposed to get the nicotine out of your system faster. I had two miscarriages before and have been holding on to this little bean as hard as I could. Honestly decide what's more important. I watched a video of and ultrasound of a women's baby every time she took a drag. The baby obviously hated it. Tons of gum and when your driving sunflower seeds.
  • Most states have a good and free quit smoking thing.  Get a fetal doppler as soon as you can hear a heartbeat.  Listen to it.  Smoke.  Listen again.  You can hear a difference, and know for a fact you are effecting your babies health.  That was the nail in the coffin for my habit - I knew logically it was bad and I should quit but I struggled so hard with it until I heard that undeniable evidence and I was just so angry with myself.
