No appetite- post partum

i literally have ZERO appetite. I know I'm supposed to be eating more especially because I'm breast feeding but I'm never hungry I literally have to force myself to eat or else I won't eat all day...I've been this way since I gave birth. Did this happen to anyone else? :/

Re: No appetite- post partum

  • Going through this now and probably since I brought baby home. I was so hungry in the first few days but now that he is hungry constantly I'm not. I'm not worried yet because he seems to be gaining well and I try to remember prenatal vitamins but if this keeps up I think I'm gonna have to start drinking a nutritional supplement

  • I'm the same way! I don't really feel hungry during the day and I almost always skip dinner. During the pregnancy, I ate so much, so this is really weird to me... My milk is coming in ok and when I do eat, I try to make it very nutrient dense, so I'm not too worried - yet.

  • YES!!! It has such a hassle bc you literally have no time or motivation. I suggest to eat some of your favorite snacks during the day or some oatmeal :) I was getting really pale and it sucked bc i just didnt want to eat but you gotta eat something girl! You get really tired and fatigue if you dont so please eat something :)
  • I have since I've been home. He will be one month old Saturday. I force feed myself since I'm breastfeeding but I have absolutely no appetite, sometimes if it weren't for my husband reminding me that I hadn't eaten dinner yet I would forget.
  • Me too!!! My doctor said she was the same. She suggested fruit and protein smoothies. I bought slim fast bc it'd easier to grab that and drinknit, but expensive and I still worry not enough calories. But, better than nothing!!! I also try to drink Greens from It Works to get all our fruits and veggies, and have some meal bars and granola bars. I used to love food and I can't wait to actually desire food again! The first week I also felt sick after eating, thankfully that is over. Baby takes what they need so we have to trust nature and just do our best :)
  • Yes I felt this way too! I was nauseated after I ate for the first week or more. Baby is now a month old and it's starting to get better but I still often wonder if I eat enough for the breastmilk I'm producing. I just try to eat as often as I can and whatever sounds good to me at the moment. My husband has been good about trying to keep my favorite things stocked in the house. Just keep trying it does get better.
  • It's normal. Same thing happened with my first. I think it's just the stress and anxiety. I still have to remind myself to eat. It's easier this time around because I just eat whenever I feed my 2 year old. Gotta remember to drink water and pee though! Sometimes I can't remember the last time I went to the restroom!
  • Phew! I was worried and im glad I'm not the only one. I started making green smoothies today. I feel like I'm not eating enough nutritious food. If I do eat breakfast it's just Cereal or cookies and milk. So im gonna try to drink a green smoothies every morning. I feel bad because I know I need more. So im gonna try maybe the shakes or smoothies to add some good stuff in my body! Thanks ladies :)
  • I will have to look on pinterest for smoothie recipes that are good for milk supply/nutrients. I feel like I avoid making smoothies becaise they take time cutting and washing fruit or greens... but I need to figure something out! What kind of smoothies have you been making?
  • In The morning I've been making a green smoothie. 1 cup of water, 1/2 lemon juice, 1 cup of strawberries, half a cucumber, an apple, and 2 cups of spinach. It's actually not that bad and it gets me pretty full and energized in the morning :) I heard it's also good for weight loss so that's just a plus lol
  • I am the same way! My LO is 3 weeks old and I was EBF (Have to top off w/a little formula since his weight gain isn't enough). I don't know if it is a lack of hunger, forgetting to eat, or a mixture of both. I do eat dinner because my husband is home and we always eat together, but even then I don't eat a lot. I have been trying to snack on small things here and there. Hopefully my appetite picks up a little.
  • I'm the polar opposite. I've been absolutely consuming everything in site. Especially high carb things and sugary things. I remember with my DD I had a hard time eating. I think it was really from the stress. I'm much less stressed this second time around so that's made eating a lot easier which good for my supply!!

My only advice is to have a bunch of premade stuff available. If you don't have to make it it's much more likely you'll get around to eating it. Paleo breakfast casseroles are excellent sources of protien and veggies and can usually be frozen. See if you can get a family member or hubby to make a bunch, cut it up into servings and then freeze it. That's what I do for my breakfast most days. Lunches are home made soups that I made and froze months ago, delivery, or a collection of easy to dump on a plate and eat foods... Like baby carrots, Canned or pre cooked chicken, lunch ham or turkey, crackers, cheese, apples, fruit salad, nuts, yogurt w/ granola, ect. Dinner has been whatever hubby brings home or a frozen meal I made while pregnant .

Protien bars and smoothies sound like a good idea too! I eat a lot of trail mix and protien bars. I keep them by my bed for snacks while nursing since they are easy to eat while nursing.
