Anyone else afraid to workout?

I have been so afraid to workout since finding out I am pregnant. We are a pretty active couple and love to road bike, mountain bike, hike, etc. We hopped on our bikes today and I was so incredibly worried the whole ride that I would cause myself to MC. It's not a fear of crashing as I am already a very conservative rider; it's more fear that it will hurt baby if I accidentally work out too much or too hard.

I know that exercise is good for us but how do I overcome this fear that any jostling, spike in heart rate (or even increase), etc will have negative consequences?

Re: Anyone else afraid to workout?

  • I am an avid crossfitter and runner and I've stopped everything due to a previous miscarriage. I plan on getting a game plan after I see the babies heartbeat and hit 12 weeks.
  • Loading the player...
  • I am kind of nervous about this too. I've just been trying to listen to my body when I work out.
  • I am by no means an avid runner but for a month before I found out about our bean, I have been running 4 miles daily
And hoping to increase miles with less time.
I have also stopped everything because of previous mc!
The worry overcomes my whole brain!
  • I just saw the dr on Thursday and he told me to keep things light until I hit 12 weeks. He said everything looks good and I shouldn't worry but because every mom has that chance of miscarriage, take it easy until the magical 2nd trimester :) He said as long as everything checks out at 12w, I can go back to regularly scheduled programming lol ;)
  • I'm going to wait till 12 weeks to continue my workouts or perhaps after my 8 week app if I get the go ahead from the doctor. I'm just so scared of doing anything more than short walks at this point.
  • awee. I have been working out lightly with weights and cardio. I hope that is ok. My trainer is specialized in pre natal. I'm not pushing myself or getting my heart rate too high. What do you guys think quit totally ?
  • My doctor said it was ok for me to continue running (usually 2-3 days per week for about 30 minutes) but I've been taking it easy for fear of miscarrying too. Until I hear the heartbeat and get through this first trimester, I think I will just relax and take shorter runs.

  • I was supposed to complete a half marathon today but decided to skip - I was paranoid it would be too much stress on my body. I run and workout a lot but still it had me worried. Better safe than sorry I guess! I did go to the gym and do light weights and the stairmill. We have been going oblong walks and hikes lately. I don't want to lose everything I've worked so hard for!
  • I asked a similar question on here a few weeks ago and someone recommended the Tracy Anderson Pregnancy Project DVD set. Just did my first workout yesterday with it! It was great because she's pregnant too! I had a MC in February so I was still a little nervous but it was helpful to have an expert talking me through it! I miss spin class and hot yoga but I'm too nauseous right now to do much anyway :)
  • I usually play a contact sport once a week and do to previous MC also do not want to take any chances. However if I show up tomorrow and say 'Hey, I'm on no-contact please' without being injured, they're totally going to know something is up lol Hadn't really thought ahead on how to get around that one. Maybe I'm fake a pulled muscle for a few weeks hahaha

  • I've practically put myself on a limited bed rest because I'm so terrified of miscarrying again! I haven't been to the gym since I got my bfp. I'm trying to keep things light and taking the dog for really long walks to keep exercising but in the safest way possible.
  • I've been running about 3 times a week the past several weeks, not super fast and about 30 minutes, and have added in some of the short fitness blender videos for lower body plus the occasional 5 pound dumbbell arm workout. Nothing too strenuous but it makes me feel good to keep some fitness up especially with all the bloating! Taking walks is supposed to be totally safe too!
  • I am sticking to walking until out of the 1st trimester.

  • I am sticking with walking too. I read a blog once while TTC that said if you are going to blame a particular activity as the reason you didn't get pregnant, just skip it for the time being (like if you run or do plyometrics while ovulating). I take the same approach right now. If something bad were to happen to my pregnancy, I would hate to blame myself because I did activities I didn't feel comfortable with at the time. I am also sticking with walks and some beginning yoga workouts.
  • I am SO glad I'm not the only paranoid person about this. Only swimming, doing restorative yoga, or walking until I'm into my second trimester. I'm freakin' ya'll!! I've had two past MC and I'm just not willing to add that as another factor that can cause MC. Gentle activity for me!
  • I got the ok from my dr the other day to continue as normal with my workouts but I am waiting till after my next appt. tomorrow to make sure things are still ok before I get back into running and cycling.
  • I took a three mile hike today while wearing my toddler on my back for most of it. I also swim and use a recumbent bike at the gym.
