Budget Dressing for the next few month!

i don't know about yall but part of me hates spending money on maternity clothes I will only be wearing for a few month! I bought some maternity leggings only bc they were $10 but If going to spend $30 on jeans I wanna wear them forever ! I'm showing so bought a belly belt to wear and my pants. I wear tunics I've had and maxi dresses...bc after this baby is out I will be able to wear them afterwards.

I'm trying out some Pinterest ideas. Hopefully they work !!

  • Try thredUP it's gently used clothes at great prices online.

  • How do you like the belly belt?
  • I'm the same way @jts2015.  I'm heading out to consignment stores and asking friends/relatives for any maternity clothes.  I'm sure I'll break down and buy a cute thing or two.  Wal-Mart has cheap maternity online....I just can't seem to find a Wal-Mart around here that has maternity clothes in store!!!

  • I have 2 Wal-Mart maternity tops (that cost me $4 each) and they are by far my favorite shirts!
  • @jenspeake i can't find any Walmart stores that carry maternity clothes either! We have like 5 in my area and they only have leggings, I was so sad might just have to order online.
  • If you aren't planning on more than one or two kids, it really doesn't make sense to pay full-price for maternity clothes. There are a lot of women in the same position, so there are a lot of gently used maternity clothes out there for cheap. :) Our local thrift stores are pretty awful in terms of selection, but consignment sales and yard sales are goldmines for maternity clothes!

  • I have some maxi skirts from pre pregnancy that still fit. Maxi dresses and cardigans all still fit, too. Basically, I just needed shirts and a few pairs of pants. I get pretty much everything from Old Navy and only purchase when they're are sales. You can get tanks for $6 and t's for $8 or so.

  • I'm totally wearing long length camis and regular sweaters with jeans at work for as long as I can. I hate maternity clothes. Yes they are comfy. But I'm frumpy and they make me feel gross.

  • I'm all about the adjustable maternity leggings I bought in the bra/underwear section at Walmart. They have clasps on the side like a bra doe a super comfy. Wearing today under a flowy dress.
  • I'm going to go the maxi skirt route for this summer! You can totally just buy the normal ones and then wear then post pregnancy too! Plus they are super comfoy
  • Old navy maternity on clearance and Craigslist. I personally love maternity clothes because they're so comfortable.
  • I second maxi skirts and maxi dresses. You can wear those post pregnancy too!

  • I bought 2 dresses and 4 shirts off oldnavy.com yesterday for $90. Figured it was a pretty decent deal.

I plan on continuing took at places like Target and TJ Maxx and H&M. Where it's my first pregnancy and I know I will have at least one more I don't mind spending a little money to get cute clothes and then save them for next time in a few years.

I went to a few consignment shops around here and there was just nothing good.

I have a few things for the last few months (I've also collected things over my pregnancies) but mostly I like to use regular clothes that work as my bump grows. I just picked up 2 cute dresses $15/each from Walmart that I purposely bought a size smaller to wear as a shirt with leggings.

  • I live in Austin and it's hard to actually come by maternity clothes that fit. I love the belly belt but ....you need long shirts to cover the zipper area. Otherwise people will see a colored panel and an unzipped zipper lol. I have 3 jeans I bought at old navy and they are way too loose. I will probably wear them when I'm towards the end of the pregnancy bc they will fit better. I hope. I'm considered "petite" so it's such a challenge. I still fit in xs. I bought some maxi skirts from target. I wore one today and paired it with a shirt I have. Worth the purchase :)
  • If you live in/near any decently sized city there are probably great parents groups on Meetup/yahoo groups. If you find one you can post for maternity clothes or watch the list for them. I bought a whole wardrobe from a new mom for $50.
  • I just went to several garage sales in my area and got 4 bags of clothes for $30. Dresses, shirts, pants, and skirts.

Download the (free) VarageSale App. It's a virtual garage sale that's within your area. My town has a TON of gently used baby/ maturity stuff on there for very reasonable prices. Some areas don't have it while others do but it's worth checking out if they do offer it writhin your area. :)
  • I went all out spent $$ buying clothes at Motherhood for my first pregnancy. This time around I went to WalMart.com and found some very nice options for jeans and shirts. I work from home and im high risk,so only go to dr apts and rarely run errands. Wal-Mart has deal where you get 2 pairs of jeans for 27.99. You choose color and fit style. They are very comfy.
  • I definitely think your besy bet will be consigment stores or sales. I ONLY shop there for my maternity clothes and always find name brand things for cheap!
  • For you ladies buying maxi skirts/dresses - are you buying regular or maternity? This is my first pregnancy. Is there enough "room" in the regular sizes for your belly when it's really big?

@VioletandRose I'm a first time mom too and have no clue what I'm doing but I've found that maturity is too big for now but regular clothes are getting tighter. I've been getting maxi dresses and skirts but making sure they stretch. I'm sure I'll need a few that are designed for a big belly but for now I find them comfortable with room to fill. Not sure if that helps at all but that's my mindset.

Mine are all my regular ones. You never really know how big you will get. My SIL got so big that I swear I could have curled up and fit into her belly (she's all legs and no torso). I have a really long torso and baby had plenty of room up and down, so I didn't have to grow outward as much.
Anyway, I think most regular dresses will get you pretty far into your pregnancy.

  • I work in an office and need to dress up. I've been worried about the cost of maternity clothes. So I swung by my local goodwill today and found a few great bottoms: 2 dress pants, a skirt and a pair of jeans for a total cost of $23! They are still in great shape. If you don't mind used clothes I would highly recommend your local goodwill :)
  • For those of you buying skirts and dresses, are you wearing something underneath them? I wore a dress last week and had the WORST chub rub of my life! I'm not a large gal, just have thicker thighs.
  • I'm facing two huge challenges:

    1. I'm a plus-sized mom, and there's verrrrry few options around here for plus, much less plus maternity.

    2. I have a very specific dress code for work, and can only wear pale blue, white or black tops with gray pants. I'm trying to stretch the use of my uniform pants, but the tops are running out of room, quick!

Sorry to hijack and basically vent. :(
  • Check ebay!! I've gotten a good bit for very cheap! Also will be wearing maxi dresses!

I'm only planning to buy one pair of maternity jeans and a few tanks - everything else can just be normal (maxi dresses and skirts, giant flowy boho tops, open sweaters.). That's my strategy for not spending much.

However, I think I will get relatively nice brands since I hope to need so little. HAVING to wear one pair of jeans every day for like four months is my reason to make 'em good. ;)
  • I bought some Pink brand t-shirts last pregnancy that fit me the whole time and I could still wear after. They were similar to this https://www.victoriassecret.com/pink/apparel-the-tee-shop/perfect-legging-tee-pink?ProductID=234351&CatalogueType=OLS

Regular. As long as you buy cotton/jersey maxis, you should be fine. They also have maxis that fold over at the waist, and you can unfold them over your belly (when you're farther along) and pair with a crop top. That's just a suggestion. Either way maxi dresses and a lot of free flowing clothes will fit well into your pregnancy.

  • I cringe every time I have to pay money for maternity clothes. Pretty much everything I've bought this time was from Old Navy, because I never have any luck with thrift stores (even though there are tons in my area, they just never have maternity in stock in my size).

I tried to not buy maternity clothes, but I just can't do the belly band and my regular tops stopped fitting the instant I conceived. So what I did is go on Pinterest for a couple outfit ideas, order similar styles from Old Navy, and when I don't need to look nice since I'm a SAHM, I'll just live in my yoga pants and XXL tee shirts.

Last time, I borrowed clothes from my hubby (shorts, tee shirts) to wear around the house. I might steal some of his button-downs to wear with leggings and a belt, too.

  • I had no choice but to buy maternity clothes my last pregnancy because I worked out side of the home and had to dress up every day, but this pregnancy I'm going to live in maxi-dresses/skirts, dress, leggings/tunics and other stretchy comfy clothes for summer.  I can't fathom buying them now.  I did buy a Bellaband to wear with my jeans right now so I don't have to buy new ones because I wont buy a single pair of jeans if I can help it.  lol

@floyd1rl  I'm the same way so I plan on buying a cheap pair of leggings and cut the legs shorter to wear under skirts/dresses.  I think I would feel more support that was as well.

  • I work for a small company and we do not see any clients face-to-face so I'm office casual lol but I still like to dress up. I bought more maxi skirts over the weekend. I'm pairing them with a long shirt and a cardigan. I just noticed my my underwear are getting too tight so now I have to buy that too ! 6 more months ladies :) lol.
  • If you ladies have pinterest, search "maternity capsule wardrobe" – lots of posts about what pieces to buy, and how to coordinate them into several different outfits. It's helping me tremendously...building a whole new wardrobe on top of everything else is really overwhelming.
  • I've gotten one pair of maternity jeans, and plan to just wear elastic-waist skirts and maxi dresses all summer. I can't justify the expense of $50 maternity pants and shirts.

  • My game plan is to get as many maxi dresses as possible. I'm not spending money on maternity clothes. I want to be able to wear anything new I buy AFTER the baby. Plus, we'll all be carrying during the summer so maxi dresses are appropriate. I live in Southern California and the weather usually warrants maxi dresses :)
