Pregnant after 35

Over 35 testing?

I'm living in sydney, Australia. I had my first baby here at 39. I had my baby in the public health care system and that means you see a midwife for all of your care unless there is a problem. Anyway, they had no qualms about my age at 39. There was no additional testing, etc. Now I'm 41 and just a bit nervous.

I'm just wondering what doctors are doing in the USA for anyone over 35. Any specific tests etc? I'm interested in getting the MaterniT21 test. Anything else I should have on my radar?

Re: Over 35 testing?

  • Typically non-invasive tests as a first step - Nt scan and then cell-free DNA test (maternti is one brand). Also cystic fibrosis testing.

Then you can move to invasive testing if you want - CVS or amniocentesis.

  • I have had many babies over 35 and this one is my second after 40. There was basically no alarm or change in my care once I became 35 or 40.  Prior to this one I was offered the triple or quad screening but I had been offered that with my pregnancies prior to 35 as well.  I always declined and no big deal was made of it.  Since the MaterniT21 type testing was readily available with this pregnancy I went ahead and did it.  It was non invasive and has a pretty good rep with being quite accurate.  If it was not offered, I would have done no other testing.

If you wanted something like an amnio I am sure one would be made available to you.  Its not something I was ever interested in pursuing.

But other than that I have no extra prenatal visits or monitoring etc.  Its just like it was when I was pregnant in my 20's
  • Thanks, ladies. I'm seeing a doctor who refers me to a midwife next Friday.
