Just bought some at the store yesterday and ate about a third of the container. I checked the UPC/SKU number, size, and expiration date and none of mine match up but it's still scary! I have an appt today so will definitely be asking my doctor about it!
I called my father in a panic. The SKU, ounce size and flavor matched and I lost it. But then the best by date wasn't a match. I'm somewhat relieved. So, hopefully the recall isn't expanded to the next week as well. WTF- can we eat anything without fear of killing our unborn child?
I was just going to say however, that in NZ we're recommended not to eat hummus at all because of the unpastuerised tahini in it which is dumb because it's delicious and has lots of nutrient in it, but it's interesting to me that the US has different recommendation or perhaps your tahini is pasteurised?
I saw this recall this morning. I am so mad! I have been avoiding foods that are warned to contain this even if I was craving them and now hummus could have it. Ugh. I have a container in my fridge was work. I might get there early today. I haven't been sick but I read that you could get sick up to 30 days later. I am really glad that my son ate all of the things that I normally dip in it (but not in the hummus) and I've been too lazy to go and buy more. I would have finished it and thrown it away already.
I guess that is what I get for eating...AND trying to eat something better than pizza and fries.
@lauramichelle58 I read that there is a blood test to determine. I would call your OB and see if they want you tested or to wait for possible symptoms.
Thanks for posting this! I'm not a huge hummus eater, but if I see it at an event I will gladly dip in. Also I didn't realize that hummus could be questionable- so thanks for the info @KateLouise.
So so mad ! the package in my fridge is part of the recall -3/4 eaten. I've talked with the sabra medical team and there putting in a request to have what is left sampled for the listeria . Called the OB and of course could only speak with the nurses . Said to drink lots of fluids and watch for symptoms . I can't believe this is happening ... Oh and I also ate the Amy's organic food that was recalled last month .... I
You're welcome. I bought some hummus last week for a camping trip, and I happened to pick Athenos over Sabra, but have eaten Sabra many times myself. For those of you who have the affected hummus lots, I hope you are not impacted. I'm hoping they're being overly cautious and recalling more lots of hummus than they know are affected. It is sad that something like hummus can have listeria, I love the stuff! I might start looking into hummus recipes and seeing if tahini sold in the US is pasteurized. Thanks for the tip @KateLouise!
Wow! So scary! I've been addicted to the stuff lately. I love the red pepper and pine nut one, that wasn't on the list but I won't be buying anymore! Yikes! Thanks for posting, I would have had no idea.
One of my baby books (I can't remember which one) said not to avoid hummus, and I've read a lot of websites that also said to avoid it or basically anything that you get out of the deli section. However, I think it's pretty safe to make your own, since you know what prep and safety goes into it. Hummus is SUPER easy to make if you have a blender or magic bullet, and you can skip the questionable tahini.
Just be careful if you have other Sabra types not currently on the recall list. Recalls can be expanded...I'd still pitch mine if I had any. Here in Texas we are seeing a recall with Blue Bell ice cream and that has been expanded to include some that were not on the initial list.
It's so scary seeing everything recalled lately with listeria, especially things you aren't expecting to find it in. It's really been worrying me lately because you don't know what product it will pop up in next.
Hey ladies. My profession is in food safety and quality - this is the type of recall that can be quickly expanded due to the type of processing that they do.
Although the type recalled is only the "Classic" at this time, it is likely that they build the rest of their flavors off the same Classic base. Additionally, none of the hummus that Sabra currently makes undergo a "kill step" such as pasteurization. So it's similar to unpasteurized cheeses, raw milk etc.
It's advisable to avoid the product until the FDA concludes their investigation and seek medical treatment if you think you are ill.
So of course I pretty much housed 3/4 of a tub of classic hummus on Tuesday. Came home yesterday and checked the sku/best buy date etc. Everything matched up. Soooo of course I'm freaking out. I called the OB office and hey took a cool 5 hours to call back. They said at this point any treatment would just be to manage symptoms- basically symptoms of typical food poisoning. But I'm super paranoid because on Wednesday I stated feeling flutters... And now I've noticed I haven't felt anything the last 2 days. I know I'm probably freaking out for no reason but I'm seriously considering going to one of the ultrasound places and getting an elective one just to see her to confirm she's still doing ok!
@frenchbulldogmom I'm in the same Boat as you . I ate most of the container and found out everything matched up . I'm so paranoid ! I talked with a medical professional at sabra and a lady named Dana at the Frito lay company who handles consumer issues . She sent a third party company out who arrived today to take the remaining bit I had .
I also called my OB and the nurses didn't seem concerned . they say to watch for symptoms and stay hydrated. My belly hasn't popped and I still have no flutters so I'm in limbo untill the 20th At my next appt.
I'm more worried that I won't get the symptoms but my baby will be affected - which sometimes doesn't even show untill after birth .
I'm glad I'm not alone . Now I'm paying extra close attention to my body
@keehank1 is sabra going to tell you the results of the remainder that they took?? I'm trying to think positive - considering I haven't felt sick at all the past couple days. I have the same worry about not having issues to me personally but the baby will and I won't know! Let me know if you find anything out. My next ultrasound/appointment is the 29th. Hoping I get some flutters or something this weekend to make me feel better! I'll be thinking positive thoughts for you too!!!
My fingers are crossed for you both but I'm confident you'll be fine. I completely understand your fears though. My tub had a May 29 date so I'm still uneasy. Take care.

I had two huge containers of this the past two weeks. I don't have the package anymore to check the number. How will I know if it's an issue????
