sushi

Ok, ok...I am as tired of the "can I eat ___?" threads as anyone else. I'm pretty liberal in terms of what I've been eating during pregnancy. I still drink coffee and have pretty much eaten everything on the "do not eat" list at least once...with the exception of sushi. I would love some tonight. I know to stay away from the raw stuff, but I've seen ladies on here that won't even eat the cooked stuff due to cross contamination.

Do you REALLY think there is a chance of cross contamination, or am I ok if I eat cooked sushi? Has anyone eaten cooked sushi and is your baby alright? LOL

Re: sushi

  • Yes. I've eaten shrimp tempura twice. Just make sure you get it from a clean place that you trust and have been to before.

  • I love my shrimp tempura roll! I've been craving it for days but my husband wants pizza tonight instead. Just go somewhere you have been before and enjoy :)
  • I'm in the eat it all club. Whenever I doubt myself I think of all the women in japan who most certainly don't cut sushi out! Somehow they still manage to have babies ☺
  • @csy2947 I'm off to japan next week and plan to indulge! @mommy grams I like you're thinking.
  • I'm so happy about this thread! I was starting to feel like a terrible mom looking through some of these threads! I drink caffeine daily and have had deli meat a handful of times! I mean come on pepperoni and salami meat trays, who says no?! Thank you for posting this @VioletandRose. Made me feel better about myself.
  • I agree with all of you! Sushi is one of my favorite things, along with medium rare steak, runny egg yolks, coffee, Coke, Kombucha, hollandaise, Subway, and probably every other thing that is on one Do Not Eat list or another. This is my third pregnancy. My other two seem alright! :))
  • I just ate cooked sushi for the third time and it was FABULOUS! at my sushi place, they are used to using new knives and cutting boards due to cross contamination concerns. My sushi comes out with an "allergy" flag on it, so I know it's been handled with care. Yummmm!!

Hollandaise is on the list??? Omg I'm failing so much at pregnancy did restrictions...I am also eating all of those things lol. I mean if you're at a reputable place I feel like everything is fine!

@BabyRolls do not deprive yourself! I was just there in December and its the best fresh and raw seafood you'll ever eat! And its everywhere! I do admire you braving that flight while pregnant though!
  • Now I really want sushi! California rolls and spicy tuna rolls are my favorite!

I've mostly played it safe but I indulge in a Frappuccino from Starbucks once a week.

My SIL is pregnant with her 4th child and on Easter we enjoyed some homemade raw cookie dough! I was a little hesitant and all she had to say was that she's done it with her 3 previous kids and they're all healthy and fine.
  • If we followed the do not eat list we'd all be starving to death. Plus when was the last time you heard of listeria outbreaks in half that stuff anyway?

Like others have said, eat from a reputable place and you'll be fine. I think that's sound advice for any restaurant!
  • @csy2947 I am definitely nervous for the flight. I plan on bringing compression socks and a boatload of snacks. Any tips for me???
  • I've been trying to eat everything I should eat, and then look ice cream and hummus were recalled for listeria! We would never eat due to worry because you never know what's next to have some type of contamination!
  • Guys, I has a roll last night with shrimp tempura, crab and avocado. It was incredible. Thanks for your feedback everyone --sushi FTW!
  • Am I wrong in thinking that eating unpasteruized cheese or spinach contaminated with listeria is worse than the food poisoning one might get from sushi? I know there are different types of food poisoning, but they all don't cause miscarriages or birth defects. I feel like listeria is the worst and that's why such a huge deal is made of it. That's why I don't mind eating cooked sushi and don't believe in depriving myself.

  • No Dr can agree on a solid "Do Not Eat" list, which leads me to believe that it's mostly crap. There are 3 risks to eating raw fish (according to the CDC). Salmonella, campylobacter, and high mercury levels.

Salmonella is a bacteria and if you eat something raw that's contaminated, you will get sick. Luckily, there is no risk to baby with this one.

Campylobacter is a parasite that, again, anyone can get. This one may cause harm to baby but it's very rare to get it if you go to a reputable sushi place.

And finally, the mercury. This is dangerous for everyone, pregnant or not. Adults can process more without causing harm to their bodies, but obviously a fetus is much smaller. The CDC has a list of high Mercury fish to avoid. Raw Salmon is amazingly good for baby's health. Also raw tuna (a lot less mercury than canned, I promise).

Sushi is Wonderful for your LOs health and it's better to take a risk and eat the damn sushi and give your baby some omega 3s than to give it up all together. A few studies have proven that. Enjoy!

Never done a long haul like that while pregnant. But I'd also drink a lot of water (so easy to dry out up there and I feel like I'm already so thirsty all the time now!) and when you're not sleeping get up and walk around once an hour. Does dramamine knock you out? Its a lifesaver for me on planes cause normally I can't sleep but dramamine is like...lol sleeping potion for me. And it's category b. good luck!
  • I have been craving sushi. But if I ate it, I would feel more comfortable choosing a cooked roll. I was at the grocery store yesterday and wanted it so bad but I was unsure because it was a grocery store (even though I'd occasionally eat from there pre-pregnancy). But they weren't put out yet, the packs were sitting on a cart. I talked myself out of my craving.... Because as I waited long and longer, I began to wonder how long they had been sitting on that cart! Didn't wan it anymore after that thought!
  • My doctor says as long as it's not tuna and from a reputable place that you have eaten at before and not gotten sick enjoy. The reason for a sushi scare is because of parasites which would make one sick pregant or not. Enjoy some salmon sashimi!!!
  • @csy2947 I was planning on that B6 and unisom that someone mentioned on another thread. Sleeping pills are tough to knock me out. I'm not a very good flyer and my anxiety level can definitely take over a sleeping pill but I'm hoping for the best. It's too bad I can't have a drink! Lol.
