Book Recommendations for my trip!

Totally not TTC related, but I'm going on this business trip Monday through Thursday this coming week and have a few flights plus multiple nights alone in my hotel room ... so, I'm looking for a new book to download for my Kindle (or buy in paperback because I love the smell of books!). I know that TCOYF is the most recommended book on this site, but ladies, I'm looking for you to expand your horizons and recommend something else. I know you can do it :) Plus I've already read TCOYF anyway.

So, any awesome books you've read recently? I'm up for pretty much anything but my typical go to's are crime novels, chick lit (not romance novels), typical "book club" type books.

Ready, go!

  • Have you read any of the books by Sarah Addison Allen (i.e. The Girl Who Chased the Moon, Garden Spells, etc)? I love those so much!
  • Dark Places - Gillian Flynn

Nothing Left to Lose - Kirsty Moseley

  • @KatWAG, @FutureMrsTCT, @jessfick66 those are all new titles for me! Awesome :) thank you!
  • @Kyleneum13 Have you read or seen Gone Girl? It's the same author of Dark Places. Very suspenseful!
  • @jessfick66 absolutely! It was my book club's first official book ... and probably in the top 3 of all the books we read. The movie was pretty good too. I'm definitely interested in reading more from her!

If you like crime novels you might like espionage. The paul christopher series by charles mccarry is amazing. The series jumps around and there's sort of no "real" order. I'd start with the Tears of Autumn. Happy reading!

Then you should read Sharp Objects. I liked it better than Gone Girl

Do you subsrcibe to amazon prime?  If so you get to download one-two of their Kindle First books each month for free.  I look forward to the first of every month to pick my two out!

If you're into the dystopian genre, there is a new trilogy out that I have read the first two books of.  It's technically YA but I thought they were good.  Red Rising and Golden Son

If you like non-fiction, I've been dying to read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.  It is about science, medical advancement and ethics and covers the case of a woman whose cells have been used for decades for medical testing without her or her family's knowledge.  It's $4.99 in kindle store.

  • @ecmb totally into YA and into dystopian ... I'll check that out! And I had no idea that was a part of Amazon Prime! I definitely have it and am stoked to check it out.
  • @ecmb - you just added to my goodreads list with Red Rising and Golden Sun. Right after I finish nerding out on reading LOTR.

@kyleneum13 - if you like YA I just read Throne of Glass series (3 books are written so far) - it's more fantasy, so it may not be up your alley, but also YA - anything by John Green - so if you haven't read Fault in Our Stars or Paper Towns get on that ish.
  • I'm reading Unbroken right now and I can't put it down! It's one of the best books I've ever read.
  • I love all YA sagas, Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games, Divergent. I've read them all.
Right now I'm reading "Belly Laughs" by Jenny McCarthy. It's cute.
  • @embuzz247 I used to use being a teacher as an excuse to read YA books. I had to keep up with my students, right? But then all the English teachers went to see the Twilight movies together ... and then I left the profession and kept reading them all ... so now I just own it :)
  • I read YA a lot and own it for the most part; Twilight I blame on my sister - even though it was horridly written, it was amazingly entertaining. Mainly because it's usually an easy read and relaxing. I love Harry Potter (finally got my SIL to read it - she finished Sorcerer's Stone in a day).
  • The Cuckoo's Calling was pretty good (first non-HP book from JK Rowling). Also, Outlander. That'll take up all of your time on the trip, but worth it. Both are available on kindle.
  • Here are some books that I've enjoyed recently, from a bunch of genres!

    • All The Light We Cannot See, Anthony Doerr (I can't recommend this enough! It took him ten years to write this novel, and every last sentence is absolutely gorgeous.)
    • Shadows, Robin McKinley (a cool alternative modern fantasy)
    • Anything by Stephanie Perkins, if you like adorable and well-written YA (titles include Anna and the French Kiss, Lola and the Boy Next Door, and Isla and the Happily Ever After.)
    • Everything I Never Told You, Celeste Ng (I actually met her recently, and she's the sweetest human being. Plus, it's her debut novel, and it's pretty darn good.)
    • Thrown, Kerry Howley (nonfiction about a woman who shadows two MMA fighters for three years. Fascinating and philosophical look at the nature of spectacle.)
I'm on a bit of a nonfiction/memoir/essay kick right now, so other recommendations are anthologies like Best American Essays 2014, and stuff like that.

  • I read Neil Patrick Harris' autobiography recently and it was hilarious. It's a choose your own adventure thing and it's awesome.

I always read heavy stuff, so I can give you recommendations, but I don't know how serious of a book you'd be alright with.

I'm obsessed with NPH. I have a friend who was on the team that just redecorated/designed his new home in New York. It's gorgeous. And I'm obsessed with the Halloween pics his family takes every year. I may just have to look into that one!
  • We have similar taste. Some of my favorites that haven't been mentioned are The Glass Castle, Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. If you like mystery/thriller you should read The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo series. I really like to read a book and then watch the movie so I'm always reading what's coming out in theaters.
  • I like fantasy books. My fav (as seen by my pic) is harry potter series. But I also really enjoy howls moving castle and the sequals.

  • If you're into a little bit older of a book Catch-22 (Joseph Heller) is seriously my go-to book - I read and re-read it all the time. I've probably read it at least a dozen times since high school.

If you liked the movie Office Space, I'd recommend Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris.

    Downtown Owl by Chuck Klosterman

Gone Girl was amazing - I read it in 4 days, which is saying a lot because of the mountains of reading I do for my grad classes right now.

And anything by Margaret Atwood - I'm currently reading The Blind Assassin but Handmaid's Tale is a reeeeally good read too :)

Guilty pleasures: The Hunger Games Trilogy - the first book is the best IMO; and The Fault in Our Stars

    Safe travels!

  • I love YA. I hardly ever read anything else. One of my students just asked me to read this series, and while they were heavier stories, I still really enjoyed them. Titles were Crank, Glass, and Fallout. I forget the author.

  • Oh!
    Also anything David Sedaris

I really like "me talk pretty one day" but since you like animals (right? or am I thinking of someone else?) I would start with "squirrel seeks chipmunk" its short stories about animals.

That's fair. I can't handle things that aren't some level of believable. Like fantasy is fine as long as there's something relatable in it. I just read it thinking I'd love it and then I was confused lol

@firebaby688 I also HATED Gone Girl, which is crazy because I LOVED the authors other two novels.
Do the other ones have more likable characters? I may give it a chance if so.

  • I've just recently started reading books by Brad Meltzer. I love that he has true history facts worked into his fiction. I find them very entertaining and educational as well!

I also loved the Robert Langdon series by Dan Brown (Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons)
