Just wonding if anyone has heard the same news. Is it normal?

At my appointment yesterday my OB said because of higher risk (1st pregnancy) and twins I will likely deliver as soon as 34 weeks and no later than 37 weeks.  Part of me is really excited that I won't be pregnant to 40 because 35 weeks with DS was more than enough for my body!  The other half is sad that once again my babies will be denied the end of their growth time.

I was also told that at 30 weeks no more travel further than an hour from the hospital.  (Gets me out of some bad summer plans anyway so not too bummed)

And finally at 34 weeks we will discuss how strict bed rest will be if he hasn't already put me on bed rest because he prefers I make it to 36 weeks.  (I have never heard of a planned date/time for bed rest to start)

Anyone else ever hear any of these things from their OB?  I still love and trust mine just curious if it is normal.

I think with twins they do say that the goal is typical 37 weeks (this is based on a friend's experience, I am having a singleton).

That being said, I am high risk due to PTL last time around and have already started increased Dr visits etc.  They also mentioned not traveling far from the hospital (for me starting at 28 weeks, based on my previous experience - if not sooner).  For now the extra visits already include cervical checks and I am on progesterone to prevent PTL.  All of the other things are going to be decided as we see what happens...

Overall it sounds to me like your Dr is giving you estimated dates on what is expected, but of course as we know, everything can change depending on how your body and your pregnancy progress.

  • With the twins they said they won't let me go past 37/38 weeks. No travel or bed rest restrictions yet (18 weeks today).
  • @abs99

What is PTL?  I am not familiar with that.

    @Sunshine620

I am glad that you got the same dates.  He won't let me go past 37weeks because DS's placenta was nearly dead at 35w1d and twins put a higher strain despite having different placentas.

Thank you ladies for responding so quickly!
  • I'm not having twins, but me myself, I am a twin! I believe that's normal because her and I were two months early! My mother was also severely concerned, but try to hope and pray for them to develop as long as possible, because they need to stay in there as long as they can. But DONT worry! Everything will be just fine. I kinda wish I had twins, I think it would be fun to be privileged for. Prayer being sent for you and your adorable little babies!
  • PTL = preterm labor
  • Several of my fellow twin moms made it to 40 weeks, one made it to 41!!! The goal was always 40 weeks for me. I was on bed rest from 20 weeks and on, and had I made it to 34 weeks I would have been off bed rest!

  • I think that is pretty normal. I had a friend deliver Surogate twins last Friday and they let her go to 39 weeks because she was doing great other than some swelling. Had the babies not been breech they would have let her go into labor on her own.

  • My cousin just had twin girls; they induced her at 36 weeks because they were running out of room. Both are healthy. She wasn't on any kind of bed rest, but she did stop working at 34 weeks.
  • @els831 and @abs99

I guess I am a PTL risk because DS was induced at 35w due to hypertension (now they are saying a few more days would have likely pushed it to pre-eclampsia).

I am at peace with all the things that were said but the time lines seemed weird to me.  I understand 37 being a max because the placenta with DS was nearly dead at 35weeks.  OB says twins puts more stress on the placenta(s) because of the shared blood supply.
  • I was told I am high risk d/t twins and being ftm my doc said he's happy if I make it to 34 weeks and 37 is considered full term but we did not discuss induction after 37 weeks

@bethhart66  I know it can be nerve racking.

But let me just say-- my little one was born at 34 weeks (I went into labor at 28weeks, but lots of work by the Drs kept her cooking), and was in the NICU for about 2 weeks.  She is now nearly 2 1/2yrs and absolutely wonderful.  Even if your little ones do come early, there is SO much they can do now even outside of your body to support them.

  • DS was a 35 weeker and we spent 10 days in the NICU so I am not a stranger in there.  He is a thriving 14mo now and I know everything will be ok.
  • DS was born at 35 weeks exactly. He was perfectly healthy & did not need the NICU. He came home with us the next day at just under 5lbs. They wanted him to reach 5lbs before leaving but he had gained 2oz overnight & was eating like a champ. He's now 5 yo & has always been healthy. This pregnancy they are giving hormone injections to prevent PTL. Hope they work!
  • I'm having twins as well di/di and my dr has put the same time guidelines
