Moving baby to his own room/crib

My little guy is 5 weeks old and has been sleeping in a bassinet in our room since birth. I'm curious at what age are mom's making the transition and putting their babies in their cribs in the nursery. Also, any suggestions for a smooth transition?

Re: Moving baby to his own room/crib

  • I plan on somewhere around 3 months. But it depends on if he is sleeping through the night at that point or not because he will be sharing a room with my 4 year old. Plus, I don't see a point to moving him further away when that's just further I have to get up and go to for those middle of the night feedings ... :)

For my DD (4 years now) we didn't move her until 8 months, but that's only because we only had a one bedroom apartment. By six months we were very ready for her to be in her own room. Transitioning was super easy because we had her whole crib in our bedroom (the only bedroom) and just moved the crib into the new room. She slept great in her crib and was sleeping through the night easily.

For this guy I plan on starting off with naps during the day in his crib in the kid's room as we get closer to 3 months so he gets used to his crib and it smells like him ect. then when naps are going really well and he's sleeping through the night or at least waking up less we will do overnight.

You could try also moving the bassinet into the baby's room first before making the transition to the crib. So he gets used to the room first and then the crib.

  • We moved DS at 7 weeks once he rolled over since it was not safe for him to be in the bassinet after that. We will move DD once she rolls over as well.
  • We moved our little guy around three weeks. Happened accidentially actually. He was fussy one night and my husband was trying to get him to go to sleep and when he finally did it happened to be in his crib. He has slept in the crib in his room every night since then. I hope your transition is smooth. Good luck!
  • We started out with him in his own room in his crib... Going down the hall is no big deal to me, especially since for the first week he was in the hospital and he was two floors up on the other end of our large hospital. He does pretty well in his own room.
  • Day 2 home from the hospital but his room is right across the hall so it's literally only a couple steps plus all his stuff is in there for changing
  • Does anyone have thoughts about SIDS and/or movement monitors? I've been wondering about transitioning too, but am fearful of something happening if I transition him while still at the highest risk for SIDS. Ultimately I believe it is everyone's decision but I am just curious what others have to say about this aspect of transitioning to crib! :)
  • We moved our first son into his nursery/crib at 9 weeks as he was outgrowing his bassinet very quickly and the second night in his own room he slept through the night for the first time! it lasted for 8 glorious months until teething changed up his sleep pattern. We plan on just playing it by ear with this guy as I think every baby is different, but probably pretty close to around then.. 2-3 months.
  • Ummmm. My first never slept in a crib. We co-slept and she never had to transition to a bed. Saved my sanity.
  • Even though I don't mind having the baby in our room, DH won't allow it if he is in there.  He has terrible sleep issues and cannot have any noises.  He has agreed to sleep on the couch until I am ready to transition lo.  We are about to reach the 7 week mark and I will probably do it soon..within the next 2 weeks.  LO wakes up twice a night hungry so that's not a problem for me to go in and feed.  If he were more colicky like my first, I would keep him in my room longer.  I suppose it depends on your sleep, your baby's sleep, and your baby's demeanor.

  • Week 3 and only bc she didn't like the bassinet and I couldn't sleep with her in the bed any longer (made me paranoid). She loves the crib but her room is also right next to ours so I can hear everything. The move does suck when it comes to the night feedings as I actually have to get out of bed now.
  • We had the baby in a co sleeper for the first few nights home and she could not settle down. Out of desperation, on night 3, I put her in her crib so that we could get some sleep and she fell fast asleep. She's slept in her crib ever since. She is even starting to have long stretches overnight. Six hours for the last two nights!!
  • We started last night 5 weeks... She has done so well in the rock and play so we moved her to the crib. It went ok but I know persistence with routine will help!
