2nd Trimester

Failed glucose test

its my 27th week and today I went for my glucose test
My readings are
Glucose, Fasting <92 mg/dL 95 H
Glucose 1 Hr <180 mg/dL 180 H
Glucose 2 Hr <153 mg/dL. 157. H

Past few days I have been eating lots of cakes and ice cream, can this be the reason of this abnormal readings?
It looks like borderline, should I go for the test again after eating healthy one week ?

Re: Failed glucose test

  • That seems a little high....what does your dr recommend?

  • I ate healthy and still failed mine. No matter what you eat your body is going to process carbs to sugar. I now have to watch my carb intake and take my sugars 4x/day. It's not hard just annoying. Should be able to eat whatever I want during pregnancy but noooooo :'(
  • Doctor has asked me to go for GD education classes and meet the dietitian ..
My concern here is because my test results are borderline do I get some benefit of doubt and can I go for one more test?

You may be able to test again but a I don't know that your insurance would cover it. Since you're borderline, they will probably just give you pointers on eating and no meds which can be a good thing. I wish you the best.
  • I would just eat healthier go to the education classes etc. Even if borderline I would not doubt that there is a cushion already built in the testing for those with false readings. I don't eat healthy in the very least and I passed mine with a 97 and I was sure I was going to fail. Plus as others have said the insurance probably will not pay for additional testing which can be pricy I believe my insurance is paying 300+ for each blood testing. Plus if you take it again and barely pass how would you know which to go off both would be borderline better to be save then sorry.
  • It could always change from boarderline to higher numbers. Go to the classes and then go from there. Like @shannonota said. It's not to hard but so annoying! Eating on a schedule is the worst thing for me because there's days where I'm not able to eat as often as they want me to.
  • We are pretty sure I had a false positive with my first and my doctor allowed me to stop testing when I was able to demonstrate through consistent readings that I was able to control it with diet and exercise.

  • Hypothetically, say you were able to got through the test again and this time you pass, now you have inconsistent results. Don't you think with something as serious as GD your doctor will advise you to take the conservative approach and to eat and test as if you do have GD?

  • I failed my 1hr with DS by 3 points, so I re took the 3 hour & passed . My understanding is while you CAN influence it by what you eat (& carbs are a large part of that, not just sweets) ; it is genetic. So you may still not pass it. My friend works out everyday, eats clean & minimal sweets & she has tested positive for it. A dietitian is a great idea if they offer it. I think with your numbers being close to the high side, that may be an option. Good luck!

  • I was diagnosed with GD at 18 weeks, kinda fought the diagnosis a bit because I only failed one value (the 2 hour) on the 3 hour test. It says that failing 2 values gets you GD diagnosis on the results. I went last week to the dietician. She explained that your insulin needs double, then triple as pregnancy progresses. She was that because of the increasing insulin needs your numbers are likely to go higher, as pregnancy progresses (hence, why they felt confident diagnosing me early). I felt much better after talking with the dietician, who was definitely a voice of reason for me. Monitoring your diet and sugars is a PIA, but so worth it for a healthy baby!

  • I was diagnosed with GD three weeks ago. I'm 14 weeks 4 days now. I went on insulin this weekend. Once you get the hang of the diet it's not too bad. I've spent a lot of time feeling depressed over the diagnosis as this is difficult. But I have a good team of doctors and an excellent diabetes nurse.
