Failed NSTs

Hi, I'm 37+3 and I've been going 2x a week for non stress tests and out of the 6 tests thus far, the baby has failed 3, so they did the biophysical profile and the baby passed with a score of 8/8 all 3 times...and 2 out of the 3x the baby DID "pass" the NST, they had to use the buzzer as a last resort to wake him/her up and get it going (after 1 1/2 hrs of monitoring)....only 1x did the baby pass on its own with no intervention....this baby has never been a very active baby either, I do my kick counts 2x a day in which the baby gives me 10 movements usually within a half hour every time.....my OB doesnt really have any answer as to why the baby has such a hard time passing the NSTs so I was wondering if anyone has been through the same thing or had any insight? I'm really starting to think there's something wrong with the baby...

I'm in the same place. She doesn't like to be to active during the test but in the evenings so moves so much. They send me to the hospital because my blood pressure is high. They do that for instant blood work to watch for preclamsia

  • We finally just passed our first one this week and I've been going for a month now. Doc says just some babies register more active than others. As long as the BPP is good you're all set!
  • I haven't failed any NSTs but have struggled with my twins activity levels during them being low. I hate the buzzer too. I've had a lot of luck drinking a big glass of apple juice right before the NST to wake my babies up. It must be hard for you to hear the baby failed the test - I really, really hope it is just a case of a mellow baby! Thoughts and prayers!
  • For me baby is extremely active but decides to go to sleep during NST's, i drink a big cup if cold water and have my snack during the test and that usually gets him moving. I also have tried lifting my leg alittle when lying in the bed, that gets him uncomfortable and he starts kicking. Hope that helps!
  • My baby is measuring large so try gave me a NST and she was sleepy so they had me chug fruit punch. She woke right up. I would try that. If your docs aren't too worried. Try not to be. I know, easier said than done.
  • They give me cold apple juice or ginger ale while I'm there and I eat right before I go in, but it doesn't do much...the very first test I actually had an IV in bc of preterm labor and they gave me a bag of sugar water through it and the baby still failed the test...baby does move a little during the tests but not enough to get the heart rate accelerations that they need...but after they buzz the baby it doesn't stop moving for a couple hours...idk, it's just very disappointing walking out of there all the time knowing the baby didn't do what they needed it to...I know they say the BPPs are more reassuring than the NSTs but still....sigh....thanks ladies for the feedback...I really appreciate it....
  • I go twice a week for NST's also. I've been going since 29 weeks. I'm 34 weeks now. My baby has been nonreactive at least three or four different occasions. It was especially scary and upsetting at first as I didn't understand quite so well. However she has always passed the biophysical profiles they'd make me get after a failed test and she always gets an 8 out of 8. She has never been a super active baby to begin with and I worry about it constantly but as long as she's passing the bpp's the nurses keep reassuring me all is well. I'm not really sure what my point is but it may help you to know that you're not alone. Actually we are almost in the same boat! Some babies are just more laid back than others I guess. Getting a nonreactive result on an NST doesn't always mean something bad. I have been reassured there is a difference between "nonreactive" and "bad" results. Still can't help but let my paranoia get to me though...
