Best Birth control while breastfeeding?

We're wanting to wait until LO's first birthday to start trying for a second.
What birth control methods would you STM recommend while breastfeeding?
I don't want to rely solely on breastfeeding hormones as birth control, but also worried outside hormones might mess up milk production.

Re: Best Birth control while breastfeeding?

  • My dr says there are low-dose birth control pills out there. Before I got pregnant I was using the nuva ring and after I stopped using it it took us nearly a year to conceive. I'd stay away from that one but I doubt your dr would put you on it.

  • Sorry I can't remember what I took last time but there are birth control pills that are safe while BFing.

  • Copper IUD, no hormones and way more effective than the mini pill
  • Mini pill is what doc gave me too
  • I was on the depo shot first with DD but that made me gain weight, very common side effect.  I switched to the mini pill after that
  • My dr recommended condoms. I told her DH wouldn't get on board with that (Not in a jerky way, he truly did try, just wasn't right for him or us). So she said do natural family planning method with pulling out. She didn't want me on a pill, not even mini and she said that IUDs sometimes lead to ectopic pregnancies and so that would be an option but something I should consider carefully, so I'm avoiding IUDs. Even though I know it's really really unlikely- it does happen, even when the proper precautions are taken. So when I started my period again, I found out when I was ovulating each month and we didn't do it or we used a condom then. And then the rest of the time we pulled out. And we didn't get pregnant until we were trying again when dd turned 2. It worked for us, but I was still nervous all the time. I'm not saying I recommend this way, it's just what happened to work for us last time.
  • I've heard good things about the mini-pill, though you have to be diligent about taking it on time every day (within three hours).  It does not have the same room for error as the regular pill.

Depending on how adamant you are about waiting a year, you could just rely on BFing as a form of birth control along with pulling out.  BFing has always been a great form of birth control for us, our LOs are spaced 2+ years apart thanks to BFing and no other form of birth control, not even pulling out.  But everyone is different.  You can read more about using it as a form of birth control if you look at the Planned Parenthood website:
    https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/birth-control/breastfeeding

Now before someone chimes in with, 'but my friend got pregnant while bfing.'  There are rules that must be adhered to if you want to use it as your only form of birth control and Planned Parenthood lists them.   Though admittedly I never followed the rules and it was still effective, so everyone is different.

  • After my first baby, I had mirena. It didn't effect my milk supply and I didn't have a period. I am horrible about remembering pills so it worked for me. I had it removed about 2 months before we started ttc, and then we were pregnant within 2 months of trying.

TCOYF has an entire section on using FAM to prevent pregnancy while breastfeeding. Essentially you really on cervical fluid and not temps until your period returns. It is extremely effective if used correctly.

The doctor gave me the minipill after my first. I was a mess with hormones. Between BFing and the pill I was a grouch, I felt off, and sex was painful and terrible for a year. I didn't get my period for 17 months, so after our second I didn't go on anything. We did a mix of condoms, natural family planning, etc. and that was all much better (I nursed for 2 years and didn't feel like my hormones were raging the whole time). Our third is just over 2.5 years apart which is perfect.

But there are definitely options and your doctor can discuss them.

  • I took the mini pill which is safe while breastfeeding. I never had any issues with it. It didn't mess with my milk production or anything. I would probably use it again this time but dh is getting a vasectomy since this will be our last!
  • You could also try something like the LadyComp. It's a bit pricey to begin with, but in the long run you save a lot.

  • I'm going back on the implanon. Was on it for three years no pregnancy scare and then conceived after one period after I had the implanon removed , the implanon is one of the few bc that do not interfere with breastfeeding or use estrogen hormones . So that's my plan :)
