Past Due! Should I avoid being induced?

My doctor said they induce a week past due date and have me scheduled to be induced on my week 41 day (about 5 days from today). This is my first, should I make them wait a week longer to induce? I heard being induced is worse and that most first timers go a week and a half past their due date. Mines was April 6.

Re: Past Due! Should I avoid being induced?

  • Technically you are not over do until 42 weeks so I would wait until then personally.

  • Reading these posts there seem to be mixed professional views. I am from Scotland and here we are allowed to go 42 weeks before they induce but it seems the American doctors want to induce from 41 weeks. Our midwives and baby books all say only after 42 weeks the placenta begins to not work as well and that is why they induce then.
  • My doctor wanted me to induce before my due date. I wasn't dilated at all and I rejected. I'm considering being induced when my body progresses more. It's really up to you.
  • My doctor allows 10 days past due, and I'll be going the full 10 (I'm 5 days past now) in hopes that she comes on her own in the meantime
  • New zealand waits 2 weeks past due date unless theres problems they check via ultra scan blood flows ect so if you are well and babies well
  • I can't wait to talk about induction with my midwives tomorrow! I am almost 40 weeks- I do NOT want to go past that for many reasons. But it's all personal choice.
  • I think its your personal choice. Every person handles induction differently. I personally choose it because my babies get big and their movement stops dramatically. If you feel comfortable then you can wait!
  • if i dont go into labour naturally before my due date i have to be induced on my due date for medical reasons
  • It is common to go till 42 weeks, but may require extra monitoring. Where I am, you are strongly encourage to be be induced around 40 weeks if you are older (39+ years old). This is due to new research that looked at complications/infant mortality rates and maternal age.
  • This is a decision you need to make with the guidance of you medical team.  Typically docs don't like going past 41w b/c of the potential for an increase in risk to the baby's health due to the placenta starting to shut down.

Perhaps you can ask for a Bio Physical Profile ultrasound to evaluate the health of baby inside and use that information to decide if you are at the point of safer out than in...or if waiting another handful of days would be a safe bet.

My OB will induce me at 41w if I get that far, and I know I am favorable for induction, so I wouldn't resist...but if I weren't favorable (Bishop's score) and I knew the baby was doing OK, I would ask to wait a little longer.

  • If I do not have him by next week we are inducing on the 20th it's just personal preference really
  • Just make sure you read a lot of research before deciding to go for it. Ina May books are very informative. Also, The Thinking Woman's Guide is a good one. Most other countries let you go to 42 weeks and have far fewer complications than the U.S.
