Wow I almost had a heart attack. Just got done chowing down on sabra olive tapenade hummus... It's so frustrating that we do our best to avoid deli meat, hot dogs, etc and could end up getting listeria from hummus or lettuce.
Everything I read says don't eat Hummus when preggo? Is it only certain types that should be avoided?
I've never heard this. But this is exactly why I still enjoy a (heated to steaming) hot dog or turkey sandwich occassionally. Since the turkey incident there have been listeria outbreaks in melons, spinach, and apples, but no one tells you to stay away from those foods for 9 months. You're just as likely to get food poisoning now as pre pregnancy so take the precautions you can and live your life.
I have a half eaten container of one of those in my fridge. I have been eating it for the past week and a half...checked the lot number and, yup, it's one of the ones identified in the outbreak. I guess I just keep my eye out for symptoms, but I am guessing I would have already started feeling sick. Aghh.
And this is why I give zero fucks about what I eat. It literally seems listeria is in EVERYTHING. So I will continue my life with sushi, deli sandwiches, and soft cheeses.
So obnoxious that pregnant women have this huge DO NOT TOUCH list yet all the listeria outbreaks are in "normal" food. You really can't win, so I just eat all the food.

Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
I actually made my own hummus on Sunday because I also read that it could be a good place for bacteria. It was super easy to make. That being said I'm seriously going to Jimmy Johns soon. I'm a FTM and bought into all the lunch meat & hot dog crap. Then freaked because I ate a scoop of Blue Bell. Listeria can be anywhere!
@dirtymartini I'm not sure and haven't done much research but I think I remember reading that the incubation time for listeria can be a few weeks, and that you may not see any symptoms but it could be affecting baby. I'm a worrier so it may be just me but I would call my doctor and ask just to be sure.
I called my doctor and they just said be on the lookout for symptoms.
I did some reading up, and yes, the incubation period can be weeks, and some people don't really develop symptoms. So, who knows. I'm feeling pretty helpless considering I could have some infection incubating in me that I have no way of knowing about and it could kill my baby.

I will now be eating all of the turkey now. I'm just so frustrated
