Being Induced..

Going in Wednesday evening. Would like to know if anybody has had experience with cervidil and pitocin to move things along? Is the pitocin as bad as I've been told? Could cervidil be all I need?? FTM and I'm not sure what to expect. Any advice or personal experiences would be nice! Thank you.

  • Just had my first baby three weeks ago and was induced. The cervadil opened my cervix to 2cm so that my waters could be ruptured by the doctor but it was a slow process. The majority of the women on my ward went into labour after a few hours of the cervadil but I had three seperate doses over five days and still needed help getting contractions started. It all depends how ready your body is.

I would recommend pain relief for the pitocin drip. I had an epidural before they began and it was the best decision I made. The contractions you experience are very intense. Your body will respond differently to somebody else's though, I gather it is a different experience for everyone.

My best advice to you would be to go in for the induction open-minded and don't rule anything out. Double the amount of clothes you were going to bring initially and be prepared for a long stay- that way you will be pleasantly surprised if the induction is a quick process.

Good luck- you'll be fine :) none of it is that bad really and trust that nothing will matter when you have your baby in your arms.

  • I had the cervadil overnight as a FTM and it softened my cervix but barely dilated me to 2 cm. Pitocin started the next morning and I agree with pp that you may want the epidural after/before bc my contractions were very strong once they broke my water and I was on pitocin. I was only in labor for 8 hours though after they began the pitocin so overall a good experience!
  • Thank you all for sharing your experiences. I'm hoping for things to go quickly and smoothly. I am a bit nervous but I'm just going to focus on how happy I'm going to be to have my baby girl finally in my arms. @emsillick how long was your hospital stay? I have heard that being induced can take anywhere between 24-36 hours. I've packed my hospital bag with the mind set of being there the most two days.
  • My experience was similar to emsillick. I started getting pitocin without epidural though, and as the pain grew strong fast, I was only dilating 1 cm every 4 hours or so. So I was waiting for about 36 hours until finally they thought i reached 10 cm, Started pushing and then realized I was still only at 7 cm so decided I wasn't going to dilate to 10 cm and babies heart rate was lowering, so I ended up having a c section.

So definitely keep your mind open to anything happening, and eat a good meal before hand! Because you can't eat anything once you start the process. Good luck!
  • Had the cervidil all night, started around 8. Shouldn't be much longer before they remove it. Been sleeping off and on all night.. Hopefully some progress happened over these 12 hours. Nurse mentioned that I had been having contractions here and there but none that I have felt..
  • Had pitocin drip and have no complaints. The epidural was ordered before the pitocin because of scar tissue on my cervix preventing me from dialating and they had to force scar tissue away. With epidural I didn't really notice the contractions until it was time to push. Had my son just over 12 hours after arriving at hospital. This wasn't a scheduled induction only happened because I was totally effaced but couldn't dialate on my own
  • @aprilk86 that is the problem I have fully effaced but won't dialate. Pitocin will start in a couple hours. Congratulations on your little one!:)
  • I still ended up needing a bulb catheter to help me dilate the first few centimeters but progressed quickly and painlessly after that (until pushing that is lol) good luck!
  • How's your induction going? In answer to your question, I was in hospital for 9 days but I was particularly unlucky. My boy was born on day five and had low blood sugar and jaundice so we had to stay later.

Part of the reason my induction took so long is because the delivery suite were so busy that they kept having to delay procedures.

I'm sure yours won't take that long but I would be prepared to be there more than two days!

    Good luck xx
  • I'm currently having contractions but haven't been able to feel them except for my back having lower pain. The nurse is about to turn up the pitocin to 16 and doctor came in to try and stretch me further (it was intense) I'm still stuck at a half centimeter dilated but fully effaced. Other than that I feel fine
