Bronchitis / When to Go to ER

I saw my primary on Monday for the beginning stages of bronchitis (get it every year, with each cold due to my junk lungs, bleh!) on the advice of OB's office. Nothing prescribed and told to wait it out and "see if I kick it".

Now it's Thursday morning, and I'm coughing so violently that I'm having major chest, rib, and ligament pains, not to mention, I can barely breathe.

Anyone ever have to advocate for themselves in this situation before to get prescribed some antibiotics, steroids, cough suppressants?

At this point, I personally feel like I need a hospital or urgent-care nebulizer or breathing machine.

OB and PCP offices open in a few hours, so I'm definitely making calls then!
I'm so exhausted and frustrated with this.

Sorry for making a separate symptom thread, but anyone who has been through something similar... I could use your advice on getting effective treatment.

  • I don't want to be that girl that demands things of her doctors, but this is torture, and I, of course, am worried.

I definitely think this scenario is worthy of its own thread!

Unfortunately I don't have any similar stories, but to me, not being able to breathe is a pretty good indication that your doctor's plan isn't working. It's good that you gave it a try, but you've had this before and you know your body. If you haven't had any improvement (sounds like you haven't!) and things have actually gotten worse, make your phone calls to your doctors when they open if you can wait that long. If they insist on following the same treatment plan, I'd say go with your gut and call up the hospital to see what they will do for you.

I hope you feel better soon!!

  • Earlier in the winter, I had symptoms of bronchitis... They also told me to "ride it out".... It was a lot of coughing up green phlegm (sorry!)...and basically drinking a lot of tea with lemon and honey and using a humidifier... Hope you find relief soon!
  • I would go to urgent care or call the office ASAP when they open.
  • I had bronchitis earlier this winter an I know it is miserable. I tried to cope on my own for a week or so using warm water, tea & honey & cough drops frequently to help with the coughing & sitting near steam showers. Slept in the recliner (couldn't lie down the cough was so bad). Had to finally get antibiotics which did the trick, was sick for about two weeks, wish I had got them sooner. Hope you feel better soon.
  • I had bronchitis as a complication of the flu. I ended up needing breathing treatments and a at home nebulizer along with 10 days of azithromycin.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks, y'all. Major props to you ladies who can tough out these respiratory bugs without drugs. My lungs just aren't tough enough.

OB called in an rx for an antibiotic and a cough suppressant. She heard me breathing over the phone, and told me that if I get any worse to go to the ER.

So glad you got some meds! Hope the kick in quick. Take care of yourself.
  • Sounds like you've already gotten ahold of someone who could help, I'm glad. But I did have a situation kinda like this one - it wasn't bronchitis, just a plain old chest cold. But it exacerbated my allergies and that in turn kicked off my weird asthma that has never been officially diagnosed but pops up every now and then. I was coughing and wheezing strongly on a Sunday and I called the nurse hotline to ask for something safe to help me open up my airway and diminish the cough. She told me to go to the ER (she could hear me wheezing thru the phone) so that's what I did. I got a breathing treatment and they sent me home with an inhaler.

Glad your doc decided to get you some meds without you having to drag yourself in again. Hope you feel better soon!

  • Feel better!! And tell that dude that there are 100 pregnant ladies feeling hormonal and angry today, and he has a target on his back. If he pulls this crap again, you will post his photo and location ;-)
  • I have been struggling with the same contemplated going in twice due to having a really hard time breathing but I camped out in front of a window with a gentle cool breeze and made it through those tough nights. I also already have inhalers that without which I would have been at emerg. Glad you got yourself checked and appropriately taken care of... Not being able to breathe is miserable business. Take care and get well soon!

  • I had bronchitis for two weeks last month and ended up coughing so hard I cracked a rib. So sorry you had to go through this while pregnant as well :( I tried everything I could think of (oodles of herbal remedies, cough syrup, tea, diy antioxidant concoctions and so on....) it finally started to subside. Not sure if it was something I tried or just the end of the cycle. Being pregnant makes colds and the flu very extreme (and terrifying!) good luck everyone!!
  • Thank you so much! I'm still coughing a bit, and have definitely pulled muscles, but I'm glad that my doc finally called in an antibiotic for the bacterial bronchitis.

Being pregnant makes me miss all of the easy OTC drugs I'm used to taking when sick!!

There's nothing worse than a lingering respiratory anything in my opinion. I hope this kid doesn't get my lungs!
  • Sounds like you got in contact with someone.
I had to finally advocate for myself due to the same thing this year. I was sick for three weeks and coughing, hoping I would kick it but by the end, I could t breathe. I finally got them to prescribe me an inhaler (which I have also had before when I have had bronchitis).
This winter has sucked for sickness.
