Bottle Size?

I am due in 4 weeks and haven't bought bottles yet. I have 3 of the Avent Natural 9 Oz bottles. I'm wondering if I should Purchase some of the 4 Oz bottles as well? And how many of them will I need? Also should I get some more of the 9 Oz bottles? I am hoping to breast feed but we want to use bottles as well so that baby is used to feeding from a bottle when I return to work. Thanks!

Re: Bottle Size?

  • I have 3 of the 4oz. And we exclusively bottle feed. The rest are 9oz. We use the Dr Browns regular and wide. I found the 9oz on both are easier to hold at night.

  • Be careful purchasing too many of one brand. I did that with Dr. Brown's because that's what I used for my other child and DD ended up not doing well so I got rid of all of them and went with a different brand. I'd wait and see what you baby likes/does well with then run to the store to buy more if needed.
  • Agree about having too many of one brand.  I actually only have the 4oz ones at the moment and my LO is 12 weeks old and eats 3-4oz.  We originally tried the Avent when he was 4 weeks old but it flowed too fast even the level 1.  So we went out and bought the Playtex nurser drop-ins and that nipple mimics breast feeding very well and he did great on those (never leaked out while feeding). We were able to go back to the Avent about 2 weeks ago and he handles it well.

  • Here's what I have :
Avent 4 oz- they flow pretty fast and LO sometimes chokes/coughs with them. Nice bottle shape for holding.
Medela 4 oz- slow flow for newborns but lots of air bubbles created.
Dr. Brown 4 oz- just started using these yesterday. Significant Decrease in air bubbles and gas in LO. Extra step in cleaning all parts but it's worth it to give LO less discomfort.

Personally, my baby has done well with the medela bottles. At first we had the Playtex vent aire bottles but he didn't do well with that nipple and the bottle seemed bulky to me. After having to pump my breastmilk since my boy wouldn't latch, we decided to get the bottles compatible with the pump and that turned out to work and be super convenient.....wish I had just done that in the first place and not spent that extra $$, but oh well....such is the life of parenting!!

As far as size, for the first few months, more than likely you wont need anything bigger than the 4-5oz bottles.

  • If you are BFing you may never need 9oz bottles.  I've BF both my DD past 1 year and they never used a larger bottle. BF babies tend to eat more frequently in lesser amounts (even from a bottle).

I got the Avent starter pack that came with both sizes and nipple flow. The slow flow was fast at first but LO got used to it...

Received lots of Dr. Brown's bottles at baby shower (different sizes) and have had issues with them leaking, the girls have liked the cheapy brands better - 4 oz bottles are easier for them right now (they're 8 weeks). (I do not breastfeed)

  • My EBF baby freaks out and coughs and dies with any regular bottle. I pump into medala bottles to store breast milk and feed exclusively with two playtex vent aire bottles. He's 8 weeks and I'm going to try to transition him to a medium flow nipple soon away from the slow because bottle feedings take forever.
  • Dsmedly- you don't want to transition nipple stages until baby is collapsing the nipple. Efficient eating for fb babies typically doesn't happen until 3-4 months.

  • I suggest seeing if the ones you have are right for your baby. I was convinced we would use doctor brown because everyone said they were best but they gagged my daughter. We've tried the Nuk bottle, Latch, and Tomee Tippee, and she likes the Latch best.
  • I only have about 5 bottles, avent aire that he took to great for the one feeding a day my husband does with pumped milk and will do more when I return to work in a few weeks. They are a more inexpensive brand and way easier to clean than some of the others
