3rd Trimester

Root Canal/Crown at 30 weeks (UPDATED)

So during my 27th week of pregnancy I had some horrible dental pain. This is the first dental pain I've had during pregnancy but I would describe it as severe, I was unable to eat or even drink anything other than room temperature liquids, and sleeping was impossible. It was March 27 when I finally couldn't take any more so I called my regular dentist to explain the issue and was told by his office manager that I would have to have an appointment before they would make an assessment of the tooth but they could get me in on April 6 (today) which would mean 2 more weeks of having only Tylenol and ice to ease the pain. (and the Tylenol was barely touching the pain and wore off 30 minutes to an hour after taking it).

So in desperation I called a nearby dentist I had seen once for an emergency appointment in 2011. The dentist not only called me back himself but told me to go directly to my pharmacy and he would have a prescription for antibiotics waiting when I arrived and he would get me in to see the tooth as soon as I had completed the antibiotics (which my OB signed off on me taking). The office manager even called me back to make sure I got everything I needed and set up the appointment. Within 2 days of starting the antibiotics I felt so much better. The intense throbbing had stopped and I was able to eat and drink and sleep again.

I finished the antibiotics and it looks like I'm going to be having a root canal (also okayed by my OB) I will be 30 weeks pregnant during my appointment.

My question or discussion point is, has any one else had work like this done this late in your pregnancy? What was your experience? I realize it's more beneficial to have the procedure than to risk preterm labor, I'm just anxious about everything.

UPDATE: I had the root canal done yesterday afternoon and I'm back at work today! It took around 2 hours for the whole procedure (including seating the temporary crown). I had one shot of lidocaine to numb the area and wasn't on my back, but at a nice angle for the procedure. If anything my anxiety was the biggest issue. It wasn't completely painless but after the procedure I used an ice pack for swell and took 2 tylenol. I woke up this morning feeling fine and my face actually looks a lot better since the swelling from the infection is gone. Just wanted to let anyone else who might be needing dental work during this 3rd trimester know my experience.

Re: Root Canal/Crown at 30 weeks (UPDATED)

  • I had a wisdom tooth pulled and wasn't needed to be put under as it wasn't impacted and the oral surgeon had a good point of retrieval.
Everything was fine and had such great relief from the pain.

  • I personally wouldn't do it.  Only because I had such bad pain after my last root canal (pre-pregnancy) and had to take Vicodin for weeks after.  There's absolutely no way I would get a root canal knowing Tylenol was all I could take after.  That's just based on personal experience.

  • @CreechMommy Totally agree. No way I would do that extensive dental work not knowing how I would be after. Afterall being pregnant changes our sensitivities and blood flow ect. I would just wait.
  • I just had one done last week (at 20 weeks pregnant), and it was a piece of cake! I went to an entodontist, the procedure took 90 minutes. The hardest part was laying in a reclined position for that long, I had to take a few breaks and sit up because I was getting light headed and short of breath. I was nervous about the necessary X-rays, but my OB assured me the radiation from the newer digital X-rays is minimal, and my oral surgeon double aproned me, just to be safe.

I think I metabolized the lidocaine faster than I normally would, sonI had to get a few boosters during the procedure. After it was done, I went home, popped a few Tylenol and napped for three hours!! I was tender (bruised jaw feeling) the following day, but nothing a few Tylenol couldn't conquer.

I hope you find relief, tooth pain is no joke! I would highly recommend seeing an entadontist if possible, it made a world of difference.

Hey ladies! I appreciate the responses! The main concern is the infection could spread and cause me to go into pre-term labor. My dentist and OB have been in communication and the OB says Lortab is actually okay after dental work but only if it's absolutely necessary. It won't be my first (or probably last) root canal. They want to reduce the risk for preterm labor as soon as possible.

The whole procedure is only supposed to take 90 minutes so I am going in tomorrow afternoon and have the option of being off work Wednesday to rest if needed!!! Hopefully all goes well.
