Babies on the Brain

Home Purchase Before or After TTC

Here's some background: Hubster and I got married in March 2014. I am 23 and he is 25. We both work full-time, are debt-free and have a savings that could probably support us for about 6 months if we both lost our jobs today. We have been saving for a condo which will cost about $300,000 where we live. It will probably take us another 3 years to save the $65,000 we need for a down-payment. We both really want to start TTC.

My question for you all is: is it better to be settled in a home before the baby arrives? Or can a baby be raised fine in an apartment? I plan to stay home at least part-time after having a baby so this, combined with baby expenses will probably cause us to flat-line our savings. I've heard the argument that purchasing a home is a big stress and easier to handle when the kids are older. But on the other hand, I can't imagine raising a baby in our current 700 square feet.

Can anyone relate to this dilemma?

Re: Home Purchase Before or After TTC

  • I have never moved with a baby since I don't have any children yet but I don't think it is that stressful. I just bought a place with my husband recently and it is not stressful just time consuming. If you end up buying a condo I would not be moving in around your due date type thing. I would buy earlier or wait until the baby is older like at least 6 months or older. My sister was pregnant with her first when they bought a house, they moved in May and she had my niece in August so she was settled in before the baby came. Also once you are pregnant you do have 9 months to figure everything out too.

You can raise a baby in an apartment if that works better for you now. I just say that babies take up room and baby gear. If you have enough room for storage and your family then stay in an apartment. If you can move to a larger apartment that has a little more room and then wait to buy then maybe that is an alternative if opportunity presents itself.

  • We started looking for a home before our first was born. We were in no rush to buy, so we took out time. We took a break from looking around when he was born (other slightly more important things to focus on) and started looking again once he was a few months old. We ended up closing a week before his first birthday and actually moved in on his birthday. We only spent a year in the apartment, but babies really don't need a lot of room. You can find smaller pieces (cribs, swings, etc...) for small spaces. Our stroller stayed just inside the door so it was always out, but really no issues for us space wise. We didn't find home buying stressful, but then again, we took over a year to find our home, so we didn't compromise and found the place that was right for us (both soace and money wise).
