Maternity vs overnight pads

Who all plans on using maternity pads and who plans on using just overnight maxi pads?
Im thinking about trying the discreet ones that are maximum absorption but still thin so people don't think your wearing a diaper.
I have No problem with the poofy maxi pads, their like a cushion for sore bottoms but it just feels like a diaper, I never did feel like i could close my legs completely with a maxi pad on.

Re: Maternity vs overnight pads

  • I'm totally going with a specific one. I used the Always Infinity Overnight (Orange) pads. They're so much thinner than the maternity ones and I find they soak up at least as much, IMO. They also are so much more comfortable. They are also the ones that I freeze bc they're thinner and more comfy.

  • I didn't know maternity pads were a thing? I bought Always Overnights that looked the thickest, fattest, hugest lol. I've been worrying if that was good enough or if I am supposed to be buying more of an adult diaper?

  • Lol from what Ive seen maternity pads are longer but they aren't as wide. I like the little always pads the best for the first two weeks when the bleeding is kinda heavy, then after that I used the infinity pads, you barely know their there, and their SO absorbent!! Like you could pee in them a little and take it off and it still be dry on the side that touches you.

I only used the huge maternity pads in the hospital. I've been using always ultra thin pads at home since my bleeding is gradually declining. If I needed the maternity pads, I'd wear them but luckily my postpartum bleeding has been on the lighter side.

  • I plan to use the huge always overnight pads with wings once home from the hospital. I bled heavily with my first for 2wks. I have always regular extra long with wings for the weeks following.

  • Always infinity gave me a chemical rash.  I am sticking with the big fat hospital pads, asking for more to take home, then will use naturacare or 7th gen chlorine-free overnight pads after that.  I react to the chemicals in the "thin" pads.  I learned that the hard way from PP bleeding for 5+ weeks.

You don't have to wear a diaper!  I have heard of women wearing depends though.  I bled pretty heavily and did fine with the pads the hospital gives you and then switching to an overnight with wings at home.

  • TMI (possibly) but i occasionally outbleed overnight pads with my periods, so i'm going to be giving maternity pads a go as a friend with a similar issue said they did absorb more. Hopefully they do!
  • Are you finding maternity pads at your regular drug store? In the same section as the period pads? I browsed all the pads in my drug store (in that section) in case I saw anything meant for this purpose but I didn't think that I found anything hence why I went with the Always pads.

  • I looked on Amazon just cause I was curious what the difference was.
There is nowhere in my town that sells maternity pads. So I'M guessing it's just not the popular or something.
  • does anyone know how long you avg bleed for after labor?

I've never seen maternity pads in the store.  Maybe the hospital pharmacy or a home-medical supply.  I just ask the nurse for extra maternity pads to take home.

    1. From Google: You may bleed for as little as two weeks to three weeks, or for as long as six weeks after having your baby. The flow will gradually become less. Red lochia usually tapers off within the first couple of weeks, though if you try to do too much too soon, it may start flowing again.

  • I also think the right underware is essential for comfortable fit with those giant pads, which was more of a challenge for me - especially with a c/s incision. I try granny pants to get above the incision, but the waistband is too tight for post-preg belly and going up a size means they are saggy in the bum and don't hold a pad comfortably. I end up cutting the waist, but if anyone had another idea, I'm all ears!

  • I used the huge hospital pads in the hospital and transitioned to the Always overnight in the orange wrappers at home. i had a csection though and at least so far (a week out) the bleeding has been pretty light since coming home. may even transition to normal pads soon, although then ill be stuck with these overnight pads since my periods are light.

I soaked them in witch hazel and water and then froze them folded back up. It is soooo cooling and appreciated after bad episiotomies. I used always infinity for this do I can only speak of them, but they worked great for it!

  • In the hospital I will use whatever they give me and then transition to the super Kotex pads. Always pads give me a reaction too. Fwiw after my first c section I bled for 8 weeks. I am going to use the granny pants to get above the incision this time around. I got the stretchy high wasted ones so the pad stays close.

Most of my local stores sell maternity pads. The big chain supermarkets (woolworths and coles because i'm in aus) as well as most of the chemists.

  • I used disposable underwear immediately following the birth of my third child. I figured why wear the undies hospitals give you (made of practically fishnet) and the pads that don't work well at all, and make a mess each time they come and palpate your belly? The depends were, admitedly, a bit awkward to buy, but so worth it because you do bleed a lot. I will be doing the same with this one.
